Named after Hans and Sophie Scholl, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz is the main square of the University in the Schwabing area. The Scholl's story is very well known to German people; perhaps lesser so abroad.

As students at Munich University, they, along with friends and other students formed the White Rose, a group which attempted peaceful protest and resistance to the Nazis. The initial resistance was fairly low key (e.g. - painting anti-Nazi slogans on walls around Munich), but later they started printing and distributing leaflets urging others to join their cause. After Sophie was caught distributing leaflets in the University, the Scholl's and others in the White Rose were arrested. They were found guilty and condemned to death in what was very much a show trial, and, immediately after being sentenced, were beheaded. An excellent recent film, Sophie Scholl: Die letzten Tage recounts the final days of Sophie's life.

The Rathaus Innards
History of the USA in the Munich Town Hall - Munich
History of the USA in the
Munich Town Hall

Okay, so I know that the Rathaus is not exactly off the beaten path, but how many people go inside? Well, we did. It's a working city hall, so hopefully people are respectful and quiet, but the inside is just as interesting as the outside.

We climbed the steps gingerly, waiting to be told to leave. But, apparently, it's a public building, so people can wander about, at least in the central area. So as you go up into the building, you see stone lions, interesting carvings, and stained glass windows of various hues. Several alcove rooms have especially interesting windows. Pictured are some windows that reminded us of home.

These kind of windows reminded us that the New Rathaus is not as old as it was made to look. :)

Enter inside the door, before the open area. There are stairs to your left and right...choose the right-hand stairs.

The Sudfriedhof in Spring
One of the advantages of living in any city is to experience it in all seasons, and Munich is a prime example. I loved the Sudfriedhof and in spring, it was full of flowers and the smells of rebirth. You can easily walk to this great cemetery by going down Sendlingerstrasse from the city center. At the far end, is this gem.

Englischer Garten: Surfing in Munich
Our bike tour took us through the English Gardens (so named because it was designed by an Englishman). There is an area on the river where the rapids flow quickly & you can often times find people in wet suits & surf boards riding the waves.
