Tegernsee is a fascinating small city bordering the beautiful clear lake of the same name. There are many traditional shops, cafes, etc. alongside the lakefront pedestrian promenade. The nicely decorated Bavarian chalet in the foreground of the photo has a painted sign on it reading " Il gelato Italiano ". This is to let you know that excellent Italian gelato ( ice cream ) is served there. The city square is in the background.
Tegernsee which is about 50 km. south of Muenchen, is a popular weekend retreat for residents of the big city. However on this mild Tuesday afternoon in mid May, there were very few tourists. Tegernsee, located in the foothills of the Alps, is just a few km. north of the Austrian border. The train and bus service from Muenchen is excellent.

The city of Tegernsee and the lake having the same name, are located about 50 km. south of Muenchen on Highway 307. Tegernsee is located in the foothills of the Bayerische Alpen ( Bavarian Alps ). The lake is not as beautiful as the true alpine lakes but is nontheless, very picteresque.
Shown in the photo is a nice flower garden in the center of the lakeside city square. Tegernsee contains many fascinating traditional Bavarian chalets and other buildings. A very nice pedestrian promenade borders the lake. There are many great places to enjoy the view while dining or having some refreshment.
The trains to Tegernesee from Muenchen depart many times daily.

Well, it's not in Munich, and I think plenty of tourists find it......but go to Tegernsee - it's absolutely beautiful! Tegernsee is the name of the lake that several towns are situated around, but is also the name of one of those towns..... Tegernsee Gymnasium (school) used to be a palace, and is absolutely amazing. There seem to be a lot of really nice ice cream parlours around here too!!

Another lake near Munich is Tegernsee, about 45 minutes south of Munich. Because it is a very popular lake, I recommend you avoid the lake during weekends.

Nice views are also seen from Ostinger Berg towards Tegernsee. You can take the whole 4-hours walking around Schliersee also, but remember to stop for a beer&bread somewhere.
