Nice beer garden just off Max-Weber Platz. Mostly a young, local crowd, enjoying food and drink in a pleasant outdoor atmosphere. Food and beer are self-service -- you work your way down an assembly-line of food and beverage options. You pay at the cashier at the very end.
And hey! The website says the whole place is a wireless hotspot now! Ain't technology wonderful. Just don't spill beer on your laptop -- yikes!
Favorite Dish: Food is above-average and the beer is the same brand you get at the Hofbräuhaus. Try the spare ribs -- they're quite good, as I recall.
The Hofbräu beer garden, not close to the famous Hofbräuhaus but owned by the same people.
A lunchtime stop for us, starting in bright sunny weather but a returning thunderstorm had us running for cover.
Anyway, perhaps a typical Munich beergarden, good food and beer and a huge choice of shady trees to shelter under.
Both enjoyed our lunches here.
Everything you imagine about a true Bavarian beer garden is here at the Hofbräukeller. Remember- this is NOT the Hofbräuhaus, overloaded with tourists and the occasional "planted" Bavarian Stammtisch to give it local color...
the Hofbräukeller is a very authentic beer garden/restaurant in Haidhausen, on the Wienerplatz, across the Isar from the 'main' parts of Munich. Of course, there'll be tourists here too, but it's a bit more authentic than any other Biergarten on the other side of the Isar.
Favorite Dish: If you are staying closeby for a long period of time, then you can try everything on the (very large) menu. If it's a one-time visit, then stick to the obvious: Bavarian cuisine and good bayerisches Bier. (It's also very true to Bavarian form, in that Weißwurst isn't served after 4PM.)
This restaurant has a huge outside area with picnic type tables and lots of trees, very nice on a warm night. The atmosphere was fun and the crowd was lively.
Favorite Dish: I enjoyed the schnitzel served with cranberry sauce.
There is a large area outside in the back where all the people hang out and have fun or you can go inside and be a stick in the mud.
I do recomend that you go outside if it is nice enough and have a beer.
Remember that beer is sold in one liter mugs.
Favorite Dish: Any sausage item or just a good old vienna schnitzel with a bowl of potato soup.
The image on the left shows the biergarden at Hofbräukeller at Vienna Platz (not to confuse with Hofbräuhaus which you see on the image at the top of this page).
