The Ratskeller resturant is housed in the vast basement of the Neues Rathaus (new town hall) building which dominates the Marienplatz. Although the Neues Rathaus is relatively young (about 100 years old), it is a classic piece of gothic architecture and this theme is carried through to the Ratskeller resturant - which makes it a great dining experience. You can choose a table in the open hall or find a little alcove tucked away in one of the adjoining passages. Aside from the basement resturant, the Ratskeller also has an outdoor terrace which is situated in a courtyard in the centre of the Rathaus building.
As for the food, it is classic Bavarian fare - and very nice and inexpensive too! A typical platter would be a selection of sausages (usually a range of regional variations of the Bratwurst and the infamous Munich Weisswurst) or roasted meat (e.g. Schweinbraten - roast pork, Entenbraten - roast Bavarian duck) with accompaniments such as sauerkraut, potato dumplings, potato noodles, fried potatotes and fresh market vegetables).
The menu is printed in English language and also has pictures of all the dishes. You can download it from the link I have provided below. The resturant is always quite busy but it is so large that you can always find a quiet spot somewhere and service is always quick.
Favorite Dish:
Being of quite simple taste, my favourite was the "2 SULZFELD BRATWURST - white Bratwurst with smothered onions and home fried potatoes and gravy", which was € 9.50.

While at Marienplatz we decided to stop in at Ratskeller for lunch. The Ratskeller is a traditional cellar restaurant located in a town hall. They serve Bavarian cuisine and lots of beer! I loved the décor and the atmosphere of the restaurant....dark woods, wooden barrels.
We ordered black Lowenbrau beer, potato pancakes (with applesauce), different kinds of sausages, and crème brulee. It was all delicious!! We could barely walk by the time we were done.
Stop in for lunch and beer!
The Rathskeller & its traditional German fare were recommended by VT members, guidebooks, and my "German for the Traveller" teacher. I wasn't disappointed. The Rathskeller was huge, and so was the menu. That's because it's in several lauguages - and has pictures. I chose pork on the bone, which was one of the best things I ate in Germany. Maybe THE best.
Since we were mainly drinking beer on the trip, we has wine here, which probably wasn't the best choice. But is was a good break from beer.
Deserts were good, too.
Located under the Neues Rathaus, characterized by athmosphere-full gothic vaults. The cuisine is a little bit more sophisticated than in other typical Bavarian restaurants, which you can notice already by taking a glance at the menu.
Favorite Dish:
My favourite dish: Krabbensuppe (crab soup).
Ratskeller is situated in the heart of the city in marien platz .It offers the best examples of bavarian cuisine .I suggest you to make reservation other wise you have to wait for a very long time
Favorite Dish:
Ratskeller mix
In the city hall basements (that's an habit of the old german cities!) you'll find this old restaurant that serves traditional bavarian food.
The ambience is typical german, with lot of wood and dark, but comfortable.
This was the location for our first meal in Germany. The Rathskeller is in the cellar of the Neues Rathaus, and is a wonderful introduction to German fare. I got the Nuremburger Sausages with Kraut. It was dark, loud, a little spooky, with a little dank thrown in - what more could you want.
You have to visit a beer hall while in Bavaria and Rathauskeller is excellently located with a great atmosphere. Perhaps not the cheapest, but the beer and food are excellent and make for a true Bavarian eating experience
Favorite Dish:
Selection of Bavarian wurst
Ratskeller in Munich, just inside the cellars of the "Neues Rathaus" am Marienplatz, far underneath the "Glockenspiel" (chimes)
They have several larger and smaller siderooms, all of them furnished in a different, lovely way, with a really great athmosphere.
In summer there is a garden-restaurant as well beeing totally in the shade, and even on a sunny day you may easily get a seat, as it is rather unknown by the tourists !
Favorite Dish:
There was a time, when I once had a side-job there, many years ago. They have a different menu every day and offer plenty of great local and international specialities.
Reservation is normally not necessary, BUT it might be, if you are just 2 or 3 persons, you will be placed on a large table, where others are eating already.
This place is just so neat. It is located under the New Rat House (city hall) that is located in MarienPlatz in the old center of town.
It takes up the whole underground of the Rathouse and is broken into many sections. The place is just a dream and the prices are reasonable with a great bottle of wine.
Favorite Dish:
Try anything on the menu.
Try the potato soup, it is AWESOME!
Any white wine is a sure winner.
