by acemj Okay, I must admit that the main reason I went into this enormous bookstore facing Marienplatz was because it had some cool looking elevators! In fact, the view from the glass elevators down onto Marienplatz is great (and free, I might add, unlike what you'll pay for climbing a nearby church tower). The inside is really cool with some interesting architectural touches like this view from the escalators looking down onto a sitting area in the picture below.
They have book on practically everything, including a decent selection of English-language titles. Leave a Comment Theme: BooksAddress: MarienplatzPhone: 49 1803484585Website: http://www.hugendubel.de/ Other Contact: 9a-8p, M-F, 9:30a-4p, Sa

by acemj Like I noted in my must see activities, the Viktualienmarkt has been open since 1807 when it opened as a small herb market and is now one of the best markets in the city selling everything from great sausages to fresh flowers and fruits. This is the best bookstore in town for travel enthusiasts. The Geo-Buchladen (Geo bookstore) is quite small but books are stores up to the ceiling and in some storage rooms outside the store. This store has travel guides on every country and National park there is, be it Burma or Patagonia, Tibet or Kazaksthan, the Bermudas or Micronesia. Next to travel guides and adventure reports you can find large format photograph books as well as a very detailed map collection. If you want to go hiking in the closeby Bavarian Alps or want to climb Zugspitze or other mountains this shop is a must. The staff is very friendly and always helpful in finding a map of a remote areas and of the scale you desire. If they do not have it they can always order it.

Shopping Bag from the Viktualienmarkt by dcwizard Any visit to Munich should include at least a short visit to the Viktualienmarkt. Located in the old center near the famous sights. it is full of wonderful stands and shops, selling fresh produce, cheeses, flowers, and other goodies to enjoy on the spot or take home.
My favorite was the honey shop. And the cloth shopping bags with colorful designs on them make great souvenirs and gifts. Do your thing for the environment, and use one of these bags at the grocery store. Do more paper nor plastic! by globetrott be prepared to find all kinds of steins to drink your beer... Good taste seems to be out of question sometimes though ....
These steins with the tin-cover on top were originally ment in order to be able to carry the beer home from the local inn or brewery. With such a cover it would not be spilled over and the bees would have no chance to taste as well...
depending on the size such a stein on the left would be around 70 Euros Leave a Comment Theme: Local CraftAddress: On Theresienwiese at OktoberfestDirections: You will find such souvenirs on Oktoberfest and also in the city, around Hofbräuhaus and Viktualienmarkt

by acemj With a great location right on Marienplatz and just about everything your could imagine inside (clothing, housewares, groceries, etc.), this is another great place to shop. Prices are average to slightly above average and there's a great food court downstairs if you're looking for cheap eats. Leave a Comment

Recently I was asked about shopping malls in Munich. There are 3 big ones. The PEP is located in Neuperlach. It can be easily reached by U4/U5 - to the station "Neuperlach Zentrum" and it is right underneath this beautiful mall of approx. 120 stores. The OEZ (Olympia Einkaufs Zentrum) was the first mall in Munich, built in the 1970s. It is close to the Olympic Grounds and can be reached by bus. It has about 140 stores, cafes, etc. The newest mall in Munich, is in fact the newest and most modern one of Germany: The beautiful Riem Arcaden. This is a super-modern shopping mall of 150 stores, shops, cafes, restaurant, a big hotel, cinemas, and other attractions. Check out their homepage at www.riem-arcaden.de Leave a Comment

special greetings to... by globetrott This type of souvenir you may get only at Oktoberfest or other festivities like Auer Dult, Kirchweih etc. Eventually you may get it in a good bakery in Munich upon request ( and would have to wait a few days for it ) But on Oktoberfest you will find several places, where you may buy a gingerbread-heart for your friends at home.
All of them look pretty, have a ribbon in order to carry it around your neck, and mostly it is also packed in plastic in order to withstand the rough life of a visitor on Oktoberfest. Most of the inscriptions will be in German unfortunately ! ...NO hugs, abraccios etc... :-((
That kind of gingerbread is quite expensive - a big one might be around 15-20 Euros ! Leave a Comment Theme: Food and DrinkAddress: Theresienwiese / OktoberfestDirections: There are several places on Oktoberfest, you cannot miss them !

by nicolaitan A Viennese designer and purveyor of expensive hand made jewelry, Frey Wille is always a stop on our European trips. Little known in the US where it has only one store in California, sales outlets are present in many major European cities as well as in the Far East. The beautiful offerings include rings, small pieces, and lovely bracelets. Enamel ( a mixture of finely ground glass with metal additives) is applied to a metal base in four layers, then 24 ct. gold powder is applied by hand. The enamel is then hand-colored and the pieces are repeatedly fired until the gold and the colors fuse. The final work is set in a 24 ct gold finished brass base. The results in real life as just as striking as the store window images, one of which is included here from Munich. The inspiration for each set of jewelry is drawn from a wide range -- modern life, ancient Greece and Rome, and the works of famous artists including Monet, Klimt, Mucha, and others. The company was founded by Michaela Frey, a Viennese artist, in 1951. Accountant Friedrich Wille joined in the 1970's, drawn by his interest in art and culture. Following the death of the founder in 1980 a new design team was created led by Wille's wife Simone. To this time, most of the work emphasized folklore and geometric designs. With a new team working, the pattern choices broadened to the wide range available today. Because of the hand made nature, sales are through approximately 45 company owned outlets including some in major department stores.
These pieces are striking, draw constant favorable comments from envious friends, but are not cheap. The average bracelet exceeds Eu500 although there are occasional significant 30% off sales. Leave a Comment Theme: JewelryAddress: One block north, half block west of Marienplatz
