The Viktualienmarkt is Munich's most famous outdoor marketplace. It is arranged like a village with solid little food stands, where you can find an incredible array of exotic fruit and vegetables, cheeses, olives, sausages and meats.
Besides that, you will also be able to find a fountain commemorating Karl Valentin, Liesl Karstadt and Weiss Ferdl - all local comedians of the past - and the mandatory maypole. And not to mention the beergarden - but you have probably read about this place in my restaurant tips already!

The specialty store of Alois Dallmayr has a long tradition reaching back to the late 1700s. Since that time, this gourmet delicatessen has offered Munich nothing but the finest in meats, cheeses, chocolates, wine and spirits, coffees, tea and tobacco. For a real treat, check out the opulent cold buffet items.
It is fun to just go inside and have a look - but you better not be hungry!!!

be prepared to find all kinds of steins to drink your beer...
Good taste seems to be out of question sometimes though ....
What to buy: These steins with the tin-cover on top were originally ment in order to be able to carry the beer home from the local inn or brewery.
With such a cover it would not be spilled over and the bees would have no chance to taste as well...
What to pay: depending on the size such a stein on the left would be around 70 Euros

Loden Frey is a really big shop with a large variety of traditional Bavarian costumes for ladies and men on several floors.
What to buy: Dirndl - this is the traditional costume for the ladies, you will see them on Oktoberfest and other festivities, as in Bavaria this type of dress is quite popular, even for weddings !
Trachtenanzug - for the gentlemen - it mostly has buttons made of the horns of deer or made of old silver-coins.
Lederhosen - for men and women
What to pay: Loden Frey is certainly a bit more expensive than other shops selling traditional costumes, BUT they have the very best choice, quality and variety !

With a great location right on Marienplatz and just about everything your could imagine inside (clothing, housewares, groceries, etc.), this is another great place to shop. Prices are average to slightly above average and there's a great food court downstairs if you're looking for cheap eats.

H & M has relatively cheap clothes that also happen to be relatively fashionable. It's a good place to grab something in style if you forgot to bring the right clothes for a night out on the town (or if you just haven't done laundry on your trip!). This place is a world-wide chain, so you won't necessarily be the most unique dresser in the room, but at least you will have saved enough money to be able to afford dinner!

Okay, I must admit that the main reason I went into this enormous bookstore facing Marienplatz was because it had some cool looking elevators! In fact, the view from the glass elevators down onto Marienplatz is great (and free, I might add, unlike what you'll pay for climbing a nearby church tower). The inside is really cool with some interesting architectural touches like this view from the escalators looking down onto a sitting area in the picture below.
What to buy: They have book on practically everything, including a decent selection of English-language titles.

This type of souvenir you may get only at Oktoberfest or other festivities like Auer Dult, Kirchweih etc.
Eventually you may get it in a good bakery in Munich upon request ( and would have to wait a few days for it )
But on Oktoberfest you will find several places, where you may buy a gingerbread-heart for your friends at home.
What to buy: All of them look pretty, have a ribbon in order to carry it around your neck, and mostly it is also packed in plastic in order to withstand the rough life of a visitor on Oktoberfest.
Most of the inscriptions will be in German unfortunately !
...NO hugs, abraccios etc... :-((
What to pay: That kind of gingerbread is quite expensive - a big one might be around 15-20 Euros !

A wonderful little shop, it seems like being forgotten during a big tidy up, modernisation of the city.
All they sell is flour, many different types. also corn and wheat and mixtures, rice, ecologically friendly produced grains and cereals, ingredients for baking, and nuts.
In little white packages or in huge sacks!
What to buy: maybe a special flour mix for baking your own bread?

Like I noted in my must see activities, the Viktualienmarkt has been open since 1807 when it opened as a small herb market and is now one of the best markets in the city selling everything from great sausages to fresh flowers and fruits.
