There are several places around the main station where you can go shopping for inexpensive Birkenstocks, but I would suggest to not necessarily buy from a store that advertises that they will ship to the US. I did this just so it would make things easier for me, and after purchasing 4 pairs of shoes they told me it would be cheaper if I just took them down the street to the post office myself. Buy them whereever you want, because you are limiting yourself to what those people have if you choose to buy from them because they ship to the US.

In Munich you have to visit one of the food stores that sell fresh meats and sausages, as well as all kinds of cold cuts. It's an eye opener if you are visiting Germany. Also shop the food stores for coffee, tea, cheeses, all kinds of chocolates and pastries. Children would love the candies.

Closed to MarienPlatz, there's the main Munich shopping area.
There are a lot of shops of almost everything.
I was quite astonished in discovering that Munich is really cheap respect to Italy (or better to Commo and Milan): the prices of the same clothes at Benetton (Italian clothes company) are lower of at least 50%!
It was a sin to have not enough time to dedicate for shopping!

Dallmayr in the centre of Munich, just a few steps away from Marienplatz, has a huge compartment of fine foods.
Dallmayr originally was famous for it's home coffeebrand "Dallmayr Prodomo" - today you can by all fine foods, even porcelain and other articles here, if you bring along a lot of money.
What to buy: Chocolates, marmalade, coffee... there aren't any limits...!
What to pay: A lot... From 20€ per product and way more!

Many of the stores boast having the worlds largest beer stein but do not even try to buy it. Most have a price tag that is just way out of this world and even if you do have the money they are not worth it.

Munich has high price tags, especially in the most elegant shopping streets Maximilianstrasse, Brienner Strasse and Theatinerstrasse, and around the Odeonsplatz area. If you forgot your golden credit card at home, this area is also great for architecture and museums. ;-)
More reasonable shops can be found in the pedestrian zone in Kaufinger Strasse, close to Marienplatz and in Sendlinger Strasse, which leads from Marienplatz to Sendlinger Tor.
Also Schwabing and Haidhausen offer interesting stores, esp. for books, foods and antiques.

Girls, the best place to find cheap European fashions is at H & M. Slow to come to the United States, you can practially find one on every corner in Europe. Munich is no exception. I think the Marienplatz even has two or three. Anyway, the clothes are cheap and you can impress your friends back home with being ahead of the current style.
What to buy: Buy whatever you want to. I can almost guarantee you that whatever you find here will eventually show up in the Unites States. You know the bohemian look that was out last summer? I bought some of it six months before it ever hit my home state in Munich.
What to pay: Almost anything you look at is under $20.

Address: Taunus str, Frankfurter Ring, Munich
Not a shop but a collection of market stalls fairground rides kiosks that appears for 10 or so weekends per year at the Mariahilf church.
What to buy: You name it, from antiques to donuts, including things you don't recognise.
What to pay: You can certainly haggle if your German is up to it, but mine isn't.

I was stunned by the many shops there are in Munich. It's a real heaven for shoplovers.
Most shops and centers are located around the Marienplatz. There's a big pedestrian zone between Marienplatz and Karlsplatz.
What to buy: Think of something and you will find it here, from the most exclusive to the most ordinary shops.
