The Dachau concentration camp is very closed to Munich, and you can easily reach it by public transportation.
If you have time, visit it: it's very instructive.

This is a must for anyone who visits Munich. Not at all hard to get to via public tramsportation.
There are English tour guides who walk you through the concentration camp, and by the end of it, you cannot help but wonder how all this came to be.
Although sobering, this trip to Dachau was worth its every while.

Dachau is a 20 minute S-Bahn ride from Munich and a 10 minute Bus ride (though only costs 1 euro). The camp is free to enter and is definately worth a visit.. its a very impressive place, and you'll learn a great deal from there.

About 20km North-West of Munich city centre there's Dachau, a town with a picturesque old town centre, and on the outskirts on the east of the town the remains of Dachau Concentration Camp have been preserved and turned into a museum & memorial to commemorate those held there in WW2.

If you're interested in 20th century history, then you really should make your way here. Admission is free. You can visit the exhibitions and the actual crematorium & prisoner's bunks. There is also a prayer center on the site.

Site of the first concentration camp in Germany, Dachau is about 30 mins away from Munchen. Note that this is a work camp (not a death camp) but the reality is, many still suffered there during WWII. Now, it serves as a haunting memorial to the atrocities committed under the Nazi rule.
The picture shows the haunting motto embedded in the gates..."Arbeit Macht Frei" (work brings freedom).
If you want to catch the film documentary about Dachau, the last showing is 3:30 - 4:00.

Take the S bahn to Dachau (a lovely little city) and (free if you have a day card) the bus to KZ gedenkstaette -the concentration camp.
It's a pleasant spot but you don't come for that. See the hut that has been rebuilt, visit the museum -and if you can stomach it, see the film.
Walk down to the crematorium and pass through beautiful woods; many of you will find it hard to avoid tears.

"Let this never to be forgotten but also never to be repeated, ever...", as it stands in former nazi concentration camp Dachau, today a memorial complex. This here is one of the reconstructed pavillions for prisoners of nazis regime, most of them never to be released from this place. You can also visit few other buildings inside of the camp, execution "showers", crematorium, chappels etc...scarry but worth seeing for. Entrance is free, you only pay for car parking!

Everyone who can should go to a concentration camp once in their lives...a sobering experience. I was afraid to go..afraid of what I would see, or how I would feel. It was not a pleasant experience, seeing how the people lived and died, but I'm glad I did it. The bizarre thing is that Dachau itself, a name which conjures up horrific images, is a sleepy little suburban town, on a local train ride from Munich. You get a bus to the camp, through leafy streets, and it's hard to imagine the contrast.

Dachau. Munich suburb, some 10 km north.
Once Dachau was famous throght it's beautiful mansion, but then Hitler came to the power and the town became sinonym for holokaust.
I'm sorry I couldn't visit the concentration camp museum due to lack of time cos athletic competition started but next time I'll be visiting Munich it'd be No.1 station on my journey.
