the new town hall by gordonilla The destination for so many visitors to Munich - the glockenspiel is housed in the Neues Rathaus (new town hall). There are mixed views of the whole experience - but go and see this firm favourite of tourists! Leave a Comment Directions: Marienplatz

by Gillianina The main square of München. I love it, it´s so full of people (tourists!), there´s a nice atmosphere and the buildings on the square (The new and old Town hall) are a nice view, while you are sipping a EIskaffee sitting at one of the cafes´ in the square. :-) Leave a Comment

clock tower in marienplatz by marzy The marienplatz is a thriving square filled with tourists and locals alike. It is a hub of activity at the end of the main shopping district. It also contains the glokenspiel (if thats how you spell it) This glorious clock tower has a showing of little statues which dance 3 times a day for 11 minutes. It is a truly boring experience but something any traveler can't leave without seeing. Leave a Comment

Marienplatz Impression by MichaelFalk1969 The most famous square of Munich gives access to the Old and New Town Hall as well as to the Church St. Peter with its viewing tower. It is centered around the Column of the Virgin St. Mary.

by VinceTraveller The sound of the glockenspiel was interestingly eriee. It sounded very ghostly it gave me goosebumps. I enjoyed myself immensely here at Marienplatz. Since I was here just before Christmas, the Christmas market was astonishing...lots of food, hot wine, hot chocolate, and so many holiday things to buy. I left with bag full of neat things. Oh, don't forget to bring the seasonal mugs the gluwine comes with. Leave a Comment

New Town Hall & Christmas market by chuying This New Town Hall begun in 1867, completed in 1908. Neo-Gothic style with 280 ft. tower has the Glockenspiel (mechanical clock) It performs (or i should say make circles) at 11am & noon. Tourist office is right on Marienplatz, under the clock tower. Get more information and a free city map before your tour. Leave a Comment

My friends in the Marienplatz by myrtle We were told at the beginning of our bike tour a quote we will never forget. They asked who all had stood around to watch the Glockenspiel in action. Many people raised their hands. The told the rest of us not to bother because "once you have seen the Glockenspiel you cannot unsee the Glockenspiel." Basically they said it's very boring to watch & it's a great time for pickpocking with everyone staring up at a clock in the middle of the square. It only happens 3 times a day, and most tourists are aware of the times to go, so it draws quite a crowd. They also mentioned that there's no point in waiting to take a picture of the Glockenspiel while it's in action because it'll basically turn out the same either way. Leave a Comment

Mary's Column by Kajser-MK We've stayed in hotel which was 10 minutes away (by foot) from the Old city . Marienplatz is the core of the old part of Munich and it is always full of people. The name of the square comes from Mary's Colum - a pillar erecter at the order of Maximilian 1. The thing what I learned here is that the four figures at the base of the column symbolise War,Plague, Heresy and Famine! Leave a Comment
