Beer garden at the Chinese Tower, English Garden by claudia1975 The Munich Hofbraeuhaus has more non-Bavarian visitors than Bavarians. Of course also some local people come here, but students and younger Munich inhabitants as well as many older folks avoid the Hofbraeuhaus. There are many nice beer halls and beer gardens, such as the Augustiner beer halls and beer gardens, the beer garden at the Chinese tower in the English Garden etc etc
Try to go out off season, when not so many tourists frequent town (when? - I don't know ;-)) Go around 10 o'clock in the morning or later in the evening Best: don't go at all - chose another place: see below...
Summer: I like the beer garden at the Chinese tower in the English Garden. Lots of Munich-ians, good food, good atmosphere, sometimes some Bavarian music and after the drinking you can sleep on a meadow in the sun .... Another good place is the beer garden at the "Wiener Platz" on the other (outside the city) side of the Isar, about 10 minutes walk from the German museum. Cross the museum's isle, walk up der Rosenheimer str. and then at the "Y" intersection keep left into the "Innere Wiener Street". At the Wiener Platz (also a small market during week days) you can already see the beer garden Winter: all throughout Munich there are several "Augustiner" beer halls. Food there is good and not too expensive and the beer tastes good as well. For locations see: http://www.augustiner-braeu.de Leave a Comment

View hiking up the Jochberg by claudia1975 Nowadays hardly any Bavarian wears the funny grey hats they sell in some tourist stores. Furthermore, people drink their beer from glasses and usually don’t use the heavy ceramic steins with a silver lid on the top. These are typical tourist souvenirs, which are not necessarily a must-buy.
Wear the hat where nobody can see you.... ;-) Drink your beer from the stein, but don't tell your friends at home that Germans drink their beer like that... Also the rumor that Germans drink their beer heated is WRONG ....
Good Munich souvenirs (in my opinion): - go to the Alps, day-hike and take some beautiful pictures - local cheese, liquor and hard saussages are good also - if you happen to go to the monastery of Andechs: they sell a six-rack of beer bottles, self brewed by the monchs and every bottle contains a different kind Leave a Comment

by Fen I don't think I want to add anything negative after I had such a good time in Munich. But if I was aware of any scams or things where my fellow Vt'ers should be told then of course I would let you all know.
I still think that buying the Welcome card is really handy for traveling around Munich and some places of interesting that your visiting will offer a discount for entrance if you have one. Leave a Comment

Maximilian's entrance by elbe It's not only a Tourist Trap, also many Munich people think the Maximilian's is a good nightclub ;-) The Maximilian's is one of the "most difficult doors" in Munich - not everyone is wellcome. Beside this everything is very expensive because there are many celebreties (for example some of the players of FC Bayern München) and wannebe-celebreties. The place is decorated like a cheap smalltown-disco and the music is not that good.
Don't go in ;-) (just if you're a young woman who wants to find an old, perhpas rich, man)
Munich is full of alternatives, not difficult to find another and better place. Leave a Comment

by acemj Marienplatz is certainly a tourist magnet, sometimes to the point that it becomes very congested and a little annoying. You're likely to hear many languages spoken here and it would be a miracle if you could cross the square without hearing a camera shutter flutter. Leave a Comment

Hofbrauhaus by TinKan The Hofbrauhaus has it's own gift shop just outside the door. We found it to be a bit pricey and found many of the same gifts just down the road for much less money. Still it is a good place to sometimes fins a bargin on a HBH tee-shirt.
Look but do not buy.
TeeShirts, Beer steins, Shot glasses and the beer dechel (beer mat) can be purchased someplace else much cheaper. Leave a Comment

Inside a beer tent at Okoberfest by TinyTuck The world's biggest folk festival it a great big tourist trap - but a fun one!! People come from all over the world! You'll meet tourists from everywhere - the ones wearing traditional Bavarian clothes might as well be over-enthusiastic Americans :-) Anyway, Oktoberfest lasts around 3 weeks from the middle of September till the beginning of October. Please notice that accomodations will be booked out about a year in advance! And what's Oktoberfest all about? It's a big fair (with roller coasters, food, souvenirs and everything) and many beer tents where the party is at! The tents open at 11 a.m. To get into one of the tents be there early (on weekends, let's say by 1 or 2 p.m.) if you wanna make sure that you'll get in! The waiters (they are all women in traditional dresses who can carry incredible amounts of beer!) are not allowed to serve you unless you are sitting at a table (however, they might still do so if you are lucky)! A Mass (liter) of beer costs € 6.80, plus you will be expected to tip them! The non-alcoholic alternative is a beverage called "Spezi". Snacks (like "Brez'n" = prezles) and real food (like "Händl" = chicken) is also served. A band plays mainly dumb German party music. The tents close at 11 p.m. Location: Teresienwiese (For some more pics take a look at my travelogue!) Leave a Comment

Restrooms - Make sure you carry change with you and be prepared. Nearly all restrooms, including those in McDonalds of all places. Not being a man, I don't know if they get charged but ladies we certainly do, around DM1 each person, if not can be a little more. Leave a Comment

It´s not really a tourist trap. Haus der 111 Biere (the house of 111 beers), has as the name say it 111 kinds of beer from 25 different counties. 1. if you really want to try the wonderfull bavarian beer, it´s not your place 2. because they really have this all 111 beers take a look at the date of expiration. There are some funny stories about this pub: 1. if you break the record, you can drink for free for the rest of your life 2. if you drink all the 111 kinds of beer it will be your pub PROS Leave a Comment

by Ansgar I would say don't go to the 'Hofbräuhaus', it is a real tourist trap. The staff is unfriendly and there are only foreigners. Also there are many typically Bavarian bars all over the city. Well but.... I was there once with a huge group of people at a conference. The conference dinner was held in the Hofbraeuhaus and it was not too bad. The americans liked it ;-) Leave a Comment
