Safest city in Germany
Munich is the safest city, in the safest state in one of the safest countries in the world. Despite its size, it consistently ranks as the city in Germany with the lowest crime rate, and even Germany's "worst" cities, like Frankfurt, regularly rank as one of the world's ten safest cities. Apart from a few shady characters hanging around the station, the place is incredibly relaxed, and walking around at all times of the day and night feels completely safe. It's just like being in a big village.
Maybe a no-go at night
Munich is a very safe city. Even to use the subway as a female alone at night is no problem.
Areas, which are - lets say - a little sketchy at night are:
- the area around the main station
- a Munich district called "Hasenbergel", which extends north of the subway stations "Milbertshofen", "Frankfurter Ring" and so on

Munich Police / Münchner Polizei
Munich is indeed a safe city with a very high police presence. But be warned: They might stop-search you anytime and anywhere especially if you do look foreign. Have your passport always within reach and NEVER let you unnerve/upset by the often extremly brazen and rude officers. Do what they want you to do except you like getting strip-searched in the middle of a busy place or carried to the next police station for taking a personal search, fingerprints and fotos.
Shouting swear swords usually results in arrest and charge of "defamation of a civil servant on duty" The administrative fine is steep, a friend of mine had to shell out a whopping 750€ ....

Very safe city
Munich, I can confidently say, is a very safe city. I did not have any feelings of danger when I was in downtown, Marienplatz, and even at the train station. The subways are quiet and the people seem to be very respectful to each other. The city is clean and seems to be organized very well by local authorities. The downtown is usually filled with a lot of tourists. However (I say this for every big city), like any big city, use common sense and don't do anything that would put yourself in danger. That includes how you handle your purse and wallet.
Damn safest city I've every visited...
I toured the whole thing.. often by myself at crazy hours.. Shiller stausse is pobobly the most dodgy.. But total safe by almost any standard..
What does happen though is the germans will often steal your American cigarettes. Its crazy.. I always drink american style... Belly up and put my money on the bar.. This of course is not the way of most places.. however old habbits die hard.. So more than once.. I would turn and look back.. Wam.. The smokes are long gone.. The money is still there... Go figure.. I have since quit smoking !
Munich is the city safer than ever I have visited. It is very normal to see high times of the night by the stations of u-bahn to police, either the national, or the own one of u-bahn. Single a danger, the night; the discotecas and the tequila.

A Fairly Safe City
It doesn't seem necessary to take any extra precautions as far as crime goes in this city. The public transport is reported to be very safe and the streets are well patrolled. I did see a caution to Women to avoid isolated public rest rooms, such as those at subway stations, at night. Pickpockets and purse snatchers are more prevalent during festivals like Octoberfest.

Personally myself, I have felt a lot safer here in Munich than I did in the United States as far as crime is concerned. The public transport system is reported to be very safe and the streets are well patrolled.
We felt very safe in Munich...
We felt very safe in Munich compared to other cities of it's size, so my only warning is not to waste time looking for some of the beautiful fountains in Winter as they are boarded up to protect them.

Munich is one of the savest cities in Europe! If you avoid things like counting your money in a dark alley or other things, that are not a good idea all around the world, most propably nothing will happen to you!
As a tourist don't ever be careless, but Munich is a safe city that is very enjoyable. As a woman I was out until 5am and I took the underground home, something that I would never do in my own home town, LA.
Don't need to be worried
I found Munich a safe place. The only place I found that might be "dangerous" (the same like in most cities) is the Central Station.
The Walking Man.
This is The walking man and walking around munich was safe. you get to see all the great architecture and just how clean the city is. (thats me underneith)
