Neuburg an der Donau Things to Do

  • Schloß

I didn’t have time to do a tour of the building on my last visit to the town - too tired from cycling 24 km before lunch and getting ready for another 24km on the return trip.I did wander into the impressive courtyard and out onto the sunny terrace. It all looked great, and I’ve made a mental note (now down in writing) to check out the interior...

  • Altstadt

Just wandering about the old town is a real pleasure. It's not big, and won't take you long. But that means you have time to explore up a few side streets! Some wonderful buildings. A sedate, chilled out atmosphere. Great on a sunny spring day, or a freezing December one.

    more
  • English Garden

The views from here looking back toward the walled town is very good. The garden is not much to speak about, at all. There are some paths trailing through the trees, but not much color and it looks to be remote

    more
  • Evangelical Church

This church is looking not to be open at all, but maybe on weekends? The onion dome looks "cool", and if it is open, entry is in the rear of parking lot

    more
  • Stadtmuseum

This is worth maybe 1/2 hour if you stretch it out. There is not much inside to see or do, but has some relics of folk of the Medieval period and also 1800's. Entry is 2 Euro and it is open 10-5PM daily in summer months.

    more
  • Oberes Tor & GAte

This is the major former entry into the old town through the walls. Today it still is for that, but few vehicles are allowed inside. It was constructed in 14th century, but rebuilt in 1541 (still old). Tow towers flank the gate and they were watchtowers. The crest of Oberes Tor is seen in picture

  • Seminar Church

It is called the Studentkirche, and has been for over 300 years, dating back to 1700 range. It is still used for the future preachers to be for prayer sessions and attendance on Sundays

    more
  • St. Peters Church

It is the oldest church in the town from 1681. The secularization changed it some in 1803, and today it is a focal point for nuns

  • Buildings in Square

This square appears small in some regards, but it is compact with a number of fine structures of BAroque style. Besides the CAtholic church, there is the town hall, Stadttheater, Hofapotheke, library of the ages factoids. It is a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery and eat somewhere there.

Neuburg an der Donau Restaurants

  • Chilling

I just had espresso & water, but it has a cafe type food menu too. Best bit is sitting on the pavement on a warm spring afternoon, watching the world go by. Good friendly service. That's Bavaria for you...€5.60 for my wee refresher. Espresso, or water?

  • Friendly

Crawled in here today after a 24km cycle from Gaimersheim. Food & drink urgently required. They supplied the goods, and quickly. A good pizza. A great beer. Friendly service (my German is very poor). It was my 2nd visit, so must have been good the 1st time too!€7 for the pizza (30cm, with black olives, Parma ham & artichoke hearts).€2.90 for the...

  • Excellent

Perhaps this ought to be filed under "off the beaten track". It is.It is also worth the effort to find. Set in the middle of a small village, next to the monastery. As an aside, you will very often find restaurants next to churches in Bavaria. This results from the local tradition of men going for a beer after church on Sunday. It is a traditional...

  • Wonderful!

This is a wonderful place for a quiet delicious dinner. It looks like a very traditional Gasthof from outside, but inside it is modern. However they have retained the warm. cosy atmosphere. When we were there it was mid-February and -12°c outside, so the warm ambiance was much appreciated.A great menu. For starter I had carpaccio of roast beetroot...

  • Coffee places and bars by the Danube...

While walking around in the city there are few very nice places to sit outside by the river and drink a cold beer. During summer or sunny days, it cannot get much better then that.

  • Best coffee house in town.

This is the best and my favourite coffee house here. Visited this town already in the past, I always used to come here to the city centre to have a cup of coffee with a good cake from their own bakery. Always excellent, fresh and tasty. However, on a hot summer day, to get a bit cool I actually ordered cold Weizen beer which make this lovely city...

This is the shopping area at the outskirt of the city. This is of course for those who want to do shopping without paying for parking and with a good choice of many stores, among them Aldi and dm.

  • Christkindlmarkt

That's a Christmas market to you and me. It is held in the church square just above the Schloss. We were there on the first Saturday in December - best enquire locally about when it's on each year. It was delightful. The old town buildings surrounding us all illuminated. The lights of the market stalls. It is not a big market - but size is not...

Nothing much more to tell about this Volksfest beside this great picture of Netta on the bike, it was not easy to take her of the bike and I had to pay again and again for more rounds till the young lady agreed to get off the bike.

Neuburg an der Donau Warnings and Dangers

  • Gili_S's Profile Photo

    by Gili_S Written Sep 27, 2004

This is only danger if you are here during a big flood. Last one was just few years ago, the black line in the picture next to the small kids head is where the water level reached in the last big flood in 1999.

Neuburg an der Donau Off The Beaten Path

  • The very old castle

This is the very old castle or fortress that I saw while walking by the river. It is located at the edge of the classic old city. Sorry, I can’t give much more details then that.

  • Stairway to heaven

These are the stairs going up from the river to the old castle, well, yes, I found out that there is some older castle here is well with watch towers, but I couldn’t really find the way in and couldn’t climb up there with Netta, half of the stairs were broken.

Neuburg an der Donau Sports & Outdoors

  • Danube Bike Trail

For my April 13 visit to the town, I cycled over from Ingolstadt. 24km each way. Took me 1.75 hrs, plus a couple of water breaks along the way. There’s an excellent cycle path all the way, following the Donau on the north bank. No traffic... I’m told it gets pretty busy “in season” but not a problem in April. It’s part of the Danube Bike Trail,...

  • Fishing

I did not try fishing myself and I have no idea what kind of fish you can catch here. But while walking by the Danube River I noticed some young people trying fishing. If you do intent to fish, better to check first with the authorities about local laws and rules.

Favorite thing: Neuburg an der donau is a small and very nice city in Bavaria. The old city and the castle are the main attractions here and also the river Danube that runs in the middle of this city.
