Picture on the brochure by Travelchili Although I am not a specialist on toys, I spent a lovely afternoon in this museum and found it spectacular. This Toy Museum was opened in 1971 and it is based on the private collection of Lydia and Paul Bayer. There are four floors in the museum and these are the following toys you are expected to see: * Ground floor: wooden toys * First floor: dolls and dolls' houses * Second floor: Tin World that include trains and steam engines. * Top floor: tells you about toy history from the immediate post-war years to toys today. I think the museum will be especially worth a visit if you have kids - it seemed like they were all having a wonderful time over there!
You can find it in the heart of the Old Town at Karlstrasse 13-15, 90403 Nuremberg. Tel 0911 231 3164 Webpage: http://www.museen.nuernberg.de/ Opening times: Tue - Sund: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Wed: 10 p.m. - 9 p.m. Mon: closed (except during the Christmas Market, then the museum is open on Monday as well). Admission fees: Adults: 4 Euro Reductions: 2 Euro Leave a Comment

Street musician by Travelchili You can always see some street musicians while walking around in the Old Town. But this particular one (seeing on the picture) made me really laugh. The dog on his shoulder had two of his legs on the accordeon and when they guy was playing, he was almost like dancing on the top of the instrument. I am sure the dog must have been trained to stay on the top of that accordeon because it didn't look like the dog would have done it otherwise.. Anyway, look around and you may see something funny at any time:) Leave a Comment

Our first stop, and maybe the most important, was the stop at the tourist office. We went up to the counter and said the kinds of things we were interested in and they made suggestions...they were awesome. this is a must first stop, they'll give you attraction info, bus info, and lodging info.
Here are the vitals: Tourist Information - opposite of the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof), Königstrasse 93 Hours: Monday thru Saturday 9 am to 7 pm Closed on Sundays Leave a Comment

Nuremberg is home to unnumerable festivals throughout the year, perhaps the Altstadtfest one of the best known. Held for 10 days in September since 1971, it is Germany's largest folklore event in Germany with over 1 million visitors. Featured are all varieties of muscial concerts including folk, jazz, pop, and rock. The fischerstechen, a jousting competition on the river, and fireworks displays round out the offerings. Plays by Nuremberg native Hans Sachs are featured. Overall there are at least 60 events over 10 days, allegedly with more than 800 participants. Hans Sachs ( 1492 - 1576 ) was a famed singer and playwright best noted for his comedies created especially for festivals. By trade he was a shoemaker living on the square carrying his name. He was also an early convert to Protestant faith. The festival is, at least in part, an annual tribute. The Hans Sachs Platz and neighboring Schutt Island in the Pegnitz are filled with surprisingly substantive restaurants and beer halls with long communal outdoor tables and some inside dining. The restaurants facades feature assorted autumn-like scenes over their entrances. And they are all mobbed. After walking throughout, we could not find two outdoor seats and ended up having to eat inside at one of the few places with any vacant seats at all. We ate at Sissy's on the Insel Schutt - spicy Nuremberger Bratwursts and the best tastiest sauerkraut ever, washed down with Erdinger beer. For dessert, we joined a long queue for individually made crepes at a walk up stand and sat on benches overlooking one fork of the river. From what we overheard, we may have been the only non-German speaking people at this remarkable gathering - an unanticipated great experience far off the typical tourist path. Held in the weeks preceding Munich's renowned Oktoberfest, this precursor event seemed far more cultured and presumably far less drunken than its more famous competitor. Leave a Comment

Old Town tower/wall by Travelchili Most of the walls and towers that surround the Old Town of Nuremberg were built during the 15th century. They have mostly stayed untouched, except for one gap in the wall and the loss of the gates of Koenigstor in the 19th century. Leave a Comment

by smoox Boy, had this place been hit. I was born in 1955, and by then most of the rubble had been cleared away - but I still recall many ruins and devastated buildings. Today, Nuremberg is attractive again, full of life and activities. When my parents built their house in one of the outskirts of the city in 1960, they found one of those bombs that never exploded - but might do so any minute, right there in our garden. Oh wow. (Sorry this picture is lousy. I´ll try and find a better one, but meanwhile........) Leave a Comment

by smoox Children will believe everything - and so I believed that on the opening night of the Christmas market, an angel (Christkind) would personally appear to start the market. The ceremony is still held every year, and a Nuremberg girl has the honour to be the Christkind. Leave a Comment
