Street musician

Favorite thing: You can always see some street musicians while walking around in the Old Town. But this particular one (seeing on the picture) made me really laugh. The dog on his shoulder had two of his legs on the accordeon and when they guy was playing, he was almost like dancing on the top of the instrument. I am sure the dog must have been trained to stay on the top of that accordeon because it didn't look like the dog would have done it otherwise.. Anyway, look around and you may see something funny at any time:)

Toy Museum

Picture on the brochure

Favorite thing: Although I am not a specialist on toys, I spent a lovely afternoon in this museum and found it spectacular. This Toy Museum was opened in 1971 and it is based on the private collection of Lydia and Paul Bayer. There are four floors in the museum and these are the following toys you are expected to see:

* Ground floor: wooden toys
* First floor: dolls and dolls' houses
* Second floor: Tin World that include trains and steam engines.
* Top floor: tells you about toy history from the immediate post-war years to toys today.

I think the museum will be especially worth a visit if you have kids - it seemed like they were all having a wonderful time over there!

Fondest memory: You can find it in the heart of the Old Town at Karlstrasse 13-15, 90403 Nuremberg.

Museumsbruecke

Favorite thing: This photo was taken from the Meat Bridge or Fleischbruecke and you can see the always busy Museum Bridge or Museumsbruecke. Behind the Museum Bridge you can also the see the Hospital of the Holy Spirit. On the Museum Bridge you can see many stands with vegetables and with some local food to buy.

Museum

Favorite thing: There are hundreds of museums in Nuremburg, the Toy Museum might be one of the more well known one, but from Pigeon Museum to Weissbierglass museum you can find almost everything....

Have a look at this fantastic list of Nuremburg museums

Please keep in mind, that most museums in Germany are closed on Mondays!

The Castle

Favorite thing: The castle('Kaiserburg'). It still looks proudly over the city which, meanwhile, has grown to a size of roughly half a million people. Of course, it is the best-known sight in Nuremberg. The rooms are open for visitors, and there´s a museum up there, as well. AND, as a treat, the former stables are Nurembergs youth hostel!

Favorite thing: take a look at this structure. No, not Rome! This is a relict of that infamous time 60 years ago, and this structure was neither finished nor badly hit later. Today, it is used for storage and as a car park, but nobody really knows what to do with it. So it sits there, falling to pieces. BUT they have recently put in a great museum: "Third Reich in Nuremberg". Nuremberg used to be Hitler´s show-off city; once a year the town hosted the "Reichsparteitag" when (chosen) people from all over the country wound come and march and sing. GO AND SEE IT - it´s worth it! Definitely! But bring time..........
The structure is called the 'Colloseum` and sits right next tp the site of our annual fair. Great amusement thing (Volksfest).

Fondest memory: The annual fair used to be one of the two places where I would be able to have my beloved grilled sausages when I was a child. Nowadays, those sausages are on sale everywhere in the old town. Then, I couldn´t wait........... (the next chance would have been Christmas time, the Christkindlesmarkt)

Favorite thing: Our first stop, and maybe the most important, was the stop at the tourist office. We went up to the counter and said the kinds of things we were interested in and they made suggestions...they were awesome.

this is a must first stop, they'll give you attraction info, bus info, and lodging info.

Fondest memory: Here are the vitals:
Tourist Information - opposite of the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof), Königstrasse 93

A look at the city´s history....
smoox profile photo

smoox 793 reviews

Favorite thing: Nuremberg is full of history and much of its historic sites have been renovated and even reconstructed.

It all started when the German Emperor decided he needed a castle here in this area in about 1050. His men looked around for a suitable place and found today´s site. When the Emperor saw it, he is said to have called, 'But it is JUST A HILL!' (in German: 'NUR E(I)N BERG'), and that´s how this little village got its new name. With the castle, it soon rose to importance, especially since the old trading routes from east, west, north and south all connected in Nuremberg.

smoox's General Tip

Fondest memory: Boy, had this place been hit. I was born in 1955, and by then most of the rubble had been cleared away - but I still recall many ruins and devastated buildings. Today, Nuremberg is attractive again, full of life and activities.

When my parents built their house in one of the outskirts of the city in 1960, they found one of those bombs that never exploded - but might do so any minute, right there in our garden. Oh wow.

(Sorry this picture is lousy. I´ll try and find a better one, but meanwhile........)

Favorite thing: This is Mauthalle, right next to Lorenzkirche and in the pedestrian zone, not far from the station. Again, an old and renovated building. Down in the basement you´ll find one of Nuremberg´s big beer cellars, the Barfüsser. Always popular! (and good beer!)
