 | Nürnberg Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 92 | | Every time I am in Nürnberg, I visit Altstadthof. It’s a small pub located about 50 meters from the Albrecht Dürer Haus, in one of the oldest buildings in the city. The pub has been there for a long time; I first visited it in 1986. Management has changed, but the quality of food and beer hasn't. Their brewery is on the premises (smallest one in the country), where the beer is brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Requirements of 1516. The four types of beer are light (Helles Lager), dark (Schwarz), red (Rothbier), and a very strong Bock. You can buy beer and mugs to take home with you. You also get a soft canvas tote with the pub’s name and logo free with the purchase. If you arrange it ahead of time, you can also take a tour of the brewery and the cellar.
What to eat when drinking beer: Krustenbrot (crust bread), Schäufele in Dunkelbiersoße (pickled and smoked pork in dark beer sauce), Specksauerkraut (bacon sauerkraut), and Kartoffelsuppe (potato soup). They're excellent and all freshly prepared. Enchilada got my vote for a good Mexican restaurant, and I am not saying this lightly. Living almost all my life in Southern California (less than two hours from the border), I have known good Mexican food. Since moving to Europe, I have also known bad Mexican food. Enchilada, luckily, belongs to the former category. The d?cor is authentic, the language is authentic, the food is authentic, and the price is authentic (I strongly believe that there is no correlation between high price and good Mexican food). The only thing that falls a bit short is the very limited selection of authentic Mexican beer. I guess I do expect a bit too much, but that's nothing new; Charles has been telling me that all along. Everything is good and freshly made. I cannot find fault with any of the dishes. The German language menu lists the daily special while the English menu does not mention it at all. Suggestion: use both, that way you can order anything that catches your fancy and you won't spend much either way. A small warning: the homebrew beer is not all it is cracked up to be. It is a blend of Mexican beer plus lime and lemon added-in. The sound of it would make you think of a Corona and lime, does it? Not really. The taste is more lemonade than beer, very light, like a cooler, something one could drink a gallon at a time in the idle hot summer days. I liked the first sip, liked it less with the second sip, and got bored the third time. If it were not because of the extra hot pepper burning my tongue, I would not reach for it the fourth time. Overall, even with my poor choice of beer, I would say it was still a good Mexican place. Leave a Comment

Barfüßer is quite a popular beer-hall, brewery and restaurant in Nürnberg and when I entered it order to take a few pictures, my lense immediately got covered by foggy condense-water, as it was so cold outside and rather hot inside. I really would have prefered to be able toshow you some pics of the great atmosphere - maybe I can do that next time. This is normally the place, where I have a beer, when I make a stop-over in Nürnberg and spend the night in my motorhome close to the trainstation.
They brew their own beer and I really like it very much and I normally have some Nürnberger Rostbratwürste, a spicy sort of small sausages, that you may buy under that name all over germany and Austria, BUT of course they taste best in Nürnberg !! Leave a Comment

Nürnberger Rostbratwürste are a must when you are in Nürnberg and you may get them at many restaurants and food-stands in Nürnberg and also in the Handwerkshof. Of course you may taste them all over Germany and Austria, but here they are best !!
Nürberger Rostbratwurst - sometimes simply called "Nürnberger" - are rather small, white pork-sausages with special spices and they will be roasted unill they get a brown skin. Mostly they are served with Sauerkraut and mustard and taste really great and are even a rather cheap meal. Lebkuchen / Gingerbread was produced by monks in various monasteries in Nürnberg since the Middle Ages and they soon became famous all over Bavaria and the surrounding countries. It was certainly also the fact that Nürnberg was centrally located and Lebkuchen could be easily transported to other places from there. When thinking of Lebkuchen - in former times also called Lebzelten - most people still think of Nürnberg, as it seems to be the best quality.
This food-stand on my picture is built on the facade of a big shopping-centre, where Lebkuchen is not only sold at christmastime, but during all of the year. Leave a Comment Theme: BakeryComparison: about averageDirections: I saw this Lebkuchen-stand in Königstrasse, not far from St.Lorenz-church.

This restaurant is part of a group of 4 restaurants belonging to the same owner. Bratwursthäusle, Bratwurstglöcklein, and Goldenes Posthorn, are all in Nürnberg, Germany. Bratwurstherzl is in Munich close to Victualiensmarkt. As the names imply, bratwurst is the specialty, and Nürnberger bratwurst is the specialty of the group. These finger-sized sausages are cooked over a wood fire and served with sauerkraut or potato salad. The food is excellent, the prices are very reasonable, and the ambiance is rustic, just what it should be. Bratwurst and beer were made for each other. What could be better? "Prosit!!! and Guten Appetite"
Nürnberger bratwurst is the specialty of this restaurant. Served with a side dish of sauerkraut or potato salad, one orders 6, 8, 10, or 12 (or more in my case). This finger-sized pork sausage with a unique blend of spices is one of the main dishes in Nürnberg cuisine. One of the spices is marjoram which adds a unique flavor. Of all the different kinds of wurst, Nürnberg is my favorite. Wurst, in Germany, is covered by purity laws (as is beer), and no sausage containing any fillers can be called "Wurst." Enjoy Nürnberg bratwurst, the best bratwurst in the world, and nobody makes bratwurst better than a Nürnberger!!! The best news is that I will be there again in April, 2007! Note: Some have written that this restaurant is "touristy." My response is that this restaurant has been a staple in Nürnberg since before there were many tourists. It is still the favorite of many locals. I have been here many, many times and it has never disappointed. UPDATE - MAY 2007: Herr Berringer has added a fourth restaurant in the altstadt also named Bratwurst Herzl. It is on one of the main shopping streets and is patterned after his other restaurants. A great ambience - perfect to try out some German dishes. This restaurant is the oldest Bratwurst kitchen in the world, or so they claim. If it is true that they are from 1419, then the fact itself is worth a visit to the restaurant!
Try the Nuernberger roasted sausages - on the side try some cabbage or potatoe salad. Very, very good if you like this kind of a food! Leave a Comment

Great, typical German restaurant to try the local specialities.
Try Nürnberger sausages, pretzels, potato salad and whatever else you have room for. And have some good German beer, too. But of course that I probably didn't even need to mention :) Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Rathausplatz 1, 90403 NürnbergPhone: +49 911 227695Directions: Easy to find, in the center of the Old TownWebsite: www.bratwurst-haeusle.de

This restaurant doesn't offer you only great food, but also a fun night of entertainment! All the food is prepared in front of you in a big heated oven and the skills of the cooks are remarkable, so your eyes are glued to his every movement. The only downfall is the price, but where do you get great and cheap Japanese food anyway? If you love Japanese and are tired of all the German dishes, go for it!!
I love their sushi and then mixed fish for the main dish. And the BEST is the dessert -- ice cream with hot berries and fruit. Yummy!! Lebkuchen are traditional German Christmas cookies similar to gingerbread, which were probably invented by Medieval monks in Franconia, Germany in the 13th century. Lebkuchen bakers were recorded as early as 1296 in Ulm, and 1395 in Nuremberg, but today, the most famous Lebkuchen come from Nuremberg, from where they are exported all over the world. Sometimes Lebkuchen are packaged in richly decorated nostalgic tins and boxes which have become collectors' items. Lebkuchen range in taste from spicy to sweet and come in a variety of shapes with round being the most common. The ingredients usually include honey, spices and nuts, almonds or candied fruit. Salt of Hartshorn and Potash are often used for raising the dough. The Lebkuchen dough is often placed on a thin wafer base called Oblate. This was an idea of the monks who used communion wafers to prevent the dough from sticking. The forerunner of today's Lebkuchen was called 'honey cake' and its history can be traced back to the Egyptians, the Greek and the Romans. They believed honey, the only widely available very sweet food, was a gift of the gods and had magical and healing powers. Honey cakes were also worn as a talisman in battle or as protection against evil spirits. Teutonic peoples used honey cakes for the same purpose especially around the winter solstice, which might be the reason Lebkuchen became associated with Christmas.
Since 1808, Nuremberg gingerbread of the best quality is called Elisenlebkuchen. It is uncertain whether the name Elise refers to the daughter of a gingerbread baker or the wife of a margrave. Since 1996, Nürnberger Lebkuchen is a Protected Designation of Origin. Lebkuchen are usually soft, but a very hard and generally inedible type of Lebkuchen is used to produce Lebkuchen hearts, usually inscribed with icing, which are available at many German fairs and the witch houses made popular by Hansel and Gretel. The closest German equivalent of the gingerbread man is the Honigkuchenpferd (honey cake horse).
