    Hauptmarkt, Nuremberg

The main market place in Nuremberg is a great place to navigate from, being right in the middle of the Altstadt. It contains the Schöner Brunnen, the new part of the Rathaus (with the Tourist Office) and the incredibly small Frauenkirche. The market is busy with some great stalls on the Friday I was there, and the market stalls dotted around the city were spectacular in general. Some of the fruit stands were so immaculately laid out and colourful that people were stopping to have their pictures taken in front of them.

Hauptmarkt is one of the most well-known Market Squares in Germany.
Hauptmarkt with the large market place in front of Our Lady's Church was built in the 14th century. It serves as a location backdrop for many events, such as for example the world-famous Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt (Christmas Market).
Colourful flowers, fruit and vegetables on the Main Market Square in the bright summer sun – here, shopping is pure enjoyment.

You can watch my 4 min 13 sec Video Nurnberg Altstadt in 2009 HD out of my Youtube channel.

The central market square (Hauptmarkt) in the middle of town is probably a place that you will walk through and, if there is no market going on, then it will appear to be a vast open space. However, on market days and especially during the Christmas market (Christkindlesmarkt), the square is full of activity from shoppers and vendors alike.

The market is located next to the Frauenkirche in the large square that also houses the Schöner brunnen (Beautiful Fountain), just down the road a bit from the castle grounds. Historically, this area used to be a swampy land that housed the Jewish quarter with homes and synagogue; however, in 1349 the city demolished the area to make room for the market with more than 600 Jewish people losing their lives (the Frauenkirche stands in the location of the former synagogue).

Regular market days have all kinds of local vendors selling anything from fruits and vegetables to craft items. Cheese, spices, breads, meats, plants, and other goodies can be found at the market and it is fun to wander between the stalls.

During the Christmas market, this square is completely filled with rows and rows of vendors, mostly selling crafts along with the traditional Glühwein (hot mulled wine), Lebkuchen (gingerbread type cookies), and other tasty seasonal treats.

For a bird’s eye view of the market square, you can walk up the stairs on the south side that lead to the second story restaurants and cafes. During the Christmas market, the Frauenkirche opens up their tower for people to climb up to the terrace and look out over the market.

The Hauptmarkt has always been centre of Nürnberg. In the mediaeval times executions took place here.
Today on the square at the Chruch of Our Lady several festivals like the annual Christkindlmarkt (Christmas Market) or the weekly fruit&vegetable market take place here.

This is probably the biggest square in the Old Town of Nürnberg, and it's still where the open air maket is held, but it's also the main meeting place in the heart of the old town.

Most of the buildings here are modern, and everything was rebuilt after WWII, so you won't find a picturesque market square like in many other central European towns, but it has its fashion too, and it's were many concerts and open air exibitions are held too.

Nowadays there is a huge football ball announcing the World Cup 2006 during which some matches will be played in Nürnberg too

Hauptmarkt , meaning the main market is a square in the middle of The old town. During the whole year there are stalls where you could buy mainly fruits and vegetables. The market is very interesting in December when people from all over the region are coming to sell their special sweets and wine. Unfortunately my stay there was in November and I couldn’t enjoy it but I have heard a lot.

Haupt Markt Platz is a large square containing the Schonner Brunnen - Beuatiful Fountain. At the time of our visit there was a colourful fruit, vegetable and flower market taking place here. The Frauenkirche and the new rathaus overlook this square. There are also several restaurants and a little supermarket here, too.

The main market place, and also the site of the Christmas market. Great displays of fruit and vegetables but, look out for a stall selling the local Frankenwein, superb, we brought several bottles home!
