    White Tower

The White Tower is a tower gate that once was part of the walls, but now stands alone in the Place. It is believed to date back to around 1250, when it was probably used as a toll-booth. This Tower has a Laufer shock tower striking clock, which was one of many in a network of striking clocks. Built out of brick and with a pointed arch gate entrance, this is quite an attractive Tower.
It would have been very sad if it had been demolished as the citizen's had wanted.

So, how did it get its name?
Easy!..... from the white plaster used in the brick masonry years ago. This has since been removed, but the name stands!

Now, there is a Metro station underneath and the White Tower is used as an entrance way.

    Weisser Turm

One of the old towers of medieval Nuernberg is the white tower (Weisser Turm). This 13th century tower was part of the city’s defense line for centuries. When this function was not longer needed, a clock was added. Now it serves as an entry for the Nuernberg metro.

    Weisser Turm, Nuremberg

The old white tower was built of sandstone in the middle of the 13th century. It stands now as an exit to the second stop on the way to Fürth for the U1 line, but also acts as a huge beacon for Nuremberg's main shopping district. From the Weisser Turm three long shopping streets fan out towards the river, while to the south stand two of Nuremberg's finest churches.

    the white tower

I have no clue why this tower is called "White Tower" as it was made of red stone. It was part of the old city fortification and acted as watch tower.
The tower marks today the entrance to the pedestrian zone "Breite Strasse"
