Situated among the rolling mountains of Bavaria 12 km west of Oberammergau is Linderhof Palace and its magnificent gardens. It was built by the mad king Ludwig II. Swimming against the tide of constitutional monarchies developing in the Europe of his time, Ludwig was a firm believer in the divine right of kings and modeled himself after Louis XIV.
The gardens are equally exotic and contain the Moorish Kiosk Ludwig purchased after it was shown at the 1867 Paris Exhibition. Ludwig's favorite, though, was the Venus Grotto, which he designed in 1876, a false cavern complete with lake and stalactites and stalagmites constructed from canvas and plaster.

Take a walk around the cemetery. There are many beautifully crafted headstones and plots as well as some history to be found here.
