Staffelstein

by richiecdisc

Staffelstein is a great base from which to explore the entire Staffelberg region, noted for its great hiking/biking paths around the flat-topped peak from which the area takes its name. It is a delightful town in its own right with an impressive 17th century half-timbered town hall which is pictured. Of course, there's a brewery in town too at Bambergerstrasse 33. It's called Gruner Braum but I found it less impressive than the city itself.

Kloster Kruezberg

by richiecdisc

Attentive readers know by now that Kloster Kreuzberg is a great value place to stay, has great cheap eats, and brews some tasty beers right on the premises, but not EVERYONE goes there for any of these reasons. It's a real life montastery and quite the tourist destination in its own right, resplendant with Franciscan monks. It is scenically situated atop the Kreuzberg, one of the many 1000 meter peaks in the Rhon mountain range.

Oberammergau

by TinKan

Oberammergau is famous as the home of woodcarvers and crib builders as well as being the home of the passion play and a quiet playground for the snow lovers. For more information on Oberammergau check out the offical site http://www.oberammergau.deand check out my tips.

Sesslach

by richiecdisc

Sesslach is something out of a Hans and Gretel fairy tale. Much like Rothenburg ob der Tauber but with far less tourists, this picture perfect medieval walled town has to be seen to be believed. It also has a communal brewery that is owned by the town's residents and it is housed in a 450-year-old half-timbered house on a cobblestoned square. It's very small so you only need a few hours to see it but I imagine it's a nice place to spend the night and soak in the great pubs after the few tourists that venture here go home. Sesslach is very close to Kloster Kreuzberg and on the way to Bamberg from there.

Tip Photo
Schlammersdorf

by richiecdisc

This small brewpub in the easily missed village of Schlammersdorf is Brauerei Witzgall, at Schlammersdorstrasse 17. It's the first place that D took me just a few days after we met last year. We walked into a room for of guys playing cards and it was as if time stood still for a few minutes. This was when we decided that I would do some pub solo while she waited in the car. It's a system that worked well in our most recent trip. ;) This small village is just 6 kilometers north of Forcheim, close to Bamberg.

Tip Photo
Buttenheim

by richiecdisc

Buttenheim is little more than a one horse village but there are two great breweries, both making the best kellerbiers in all of Bavaria. This photo is from the more famous St. Georgen Brauerei at Markstrasse 12 but its neighbor at number 8, the Lowenbrau is more down to earth and every drop as good. Buttenhiem is halfway between Bamberg and Forcheim.

Tip Photo
Ettal

by richiecdisc

A large beautiful 14th century monastery in the Rococo style dominates this mountain village close to Obermmergau's Passion Play. It's also a brewing monastery and their Klosterbrau Dunkle is one of the best in southern Bavaria. Just up the road from Murnau in the foothills of the Bavaria Alps.

Tip Photo
Memmelsdorf

by richiecdisc

Just six kilometers northeast of Bamberg lies another quaint village with a few brewpubs to boast, offering some smoky brews like their more famous neighbor. Memmelsdorf is a nice photo stop too, especially at sunset.

Tip Photo
Schesslitz

by richiecdisc

Another small village just outside of Bamberg and most noted for having three brewpubs all on the main street! Not much has changed since the 19th century in any of the three. I've tried two of them so far and both still dispensed their vollbiers from kegs sitting on the bar. Senger (pictured) is at Oberend 11 and Schmitt is at Oberend 19, while Drei Kronnen is on the Haupstrasse at number 39, just up the street as well. The last entry has been family run since 1776. Try any for a real slice of Franconia.

Tip Photo
Vierzehnheiligen

by richiecdisc

This impressive church dates back to 1745 and is noted for its extravagant Rococo art but monks settled this hilltop shrine in 1445 after a peasant saw visions of Jesus and the fourteen saints (hence the name Vierzehnheilgen). The brewing of beer dates back to this time as well and its name Nothelfertrunk means "emergency aid drink." The Monastery lies in the Staffelberg region and one can walk from one village (most with breweries!) to the next on groomed trails, many suitable for biking.
