Ottobeuren Things to Do

  • Market square

The market square is found below the basilica. It’s a rectangular place, with the large “Haus des Gastes” on one side and several different coloured houses on the other side. What also quickly catches your eye when looking at the market square from the basilica is the town hall on the opposite side, with its orange colour and the arcades. Near the...

The monastery museum is something you should not miss when you are in Ottobeuren. Already when walking through the corridors and up the stairs you will see many frescos, ornamentation etc. Then in the museum, there are magnificent rooms again, like the library with its thousands of old books or the “Kaisersaal” (emperor hall) where today concerts...

  • The basilica

The basilica was built 1737-66 and is a monastery and parish church, dedicated to St Alexander and St Theodor. The interior is really magnificent, in late baroque/ rococo style. There had been major renovations recently, and there are still some parts being renovated currently. The two baroque organs are also pretty famous and there are regularly...

  • MARKET SQUARE

The market square in Ottobeuren is where we parked our car. The walk to the Basilica and Abbey wasn't far from here, and then, after our walk, we were able to enjoy a drink at one of the Cafe's in the square. What a nice spot, with lovely flowers to look at, and a really lovely, bright orange Rathaus. In the middle, was some kind of water canal.

  • OTTOBEUREN ABBEY BASILICA

Arriving in Ottobeuren, we decided to park the car in the town square and have a look at the huge Basilica overlooking the town square. The Basilica, built between 1737 -1766, to me was an unusual shade of green, with pink/lavender columns. It is part of the Benedictine monastery which was founded in 764, and is recognized as one of the most ornate...

As the name of that restaurant implies, it's found at the market square. They have several places in front of the restaurant and they serve mainly German food. My husband had a kind of potato pancake with salmon, and I had a salad with chicken. It was great that you could get it as small portion, and I was pretty amused that this ended up as “senior portion” on the bill, I didn’t know I’m a senior already!
