I had breast of turkey with Gorgonzola-sauce, noodles, salad and a local beer and it was simply delicious.
From the terrace you also have a great view on the Danube and the ships passing by ! Bring a lot of time, as the service is really a bit slow and the choice of food and drinks is also not special, BUT who cares about that, when you may have such a great view.
I was there on a sunny afternoon and wanted to have coffe and some cake. I even got a great table directely at the fence, but after having to wait for more than 10 minutes, I gave up waiting and went to the other cafe in the INNERcourt of the castle - see my next restaurant-tip !! This restaurant is certainly the best place for a romantic lunch or dinner in Passau.
The restaurant is open daily after 06.00p.m.
Sundays and holidays also 11.00a.m.-02.00p.m.
The restaurant is always closed on Tuesday !

The cafe is less crowded, but it has also a few great tables directely facing the city of Passau - like shown on my picture.
I had a coffee and a tasty apple-cake and I was lucky to get one of the 3 tables inside the niches facing the city of Passau.
All the other tables in the cafe will have no view of the town , but there are also a few tables in the innercourt of the castle.
The cafe is run by a young couple still working with great enthousiasm and they have a nice menu as well. When searching for a restaurant serving food late at night, after 10.00 p.m. the choice of restaurants is really limited and in restaurant Piräus you may order food still untill shortly before 11.00p.m.
The restaurant is open daily : 11.00a.m. - 11.00p.m.
I had Tsaziki, a greek farmer' salad and a spinach-stroodle. And I had first a light white wine with the food and a glass of Samos for desert. Samos is a really sweet and also very strong wine with about 16% of alcohol. 1/8 of a litre of that wine will make sure, you are not allowed to drive any more.
NO problem for me, as i had my motorhome just around the corner... Located on the site of the Hacklberg brewery, this Wirsthaus is worth a visit. There is a huge beer garden, an outside patio, and an inside restaurant. The beer is great, and the menu does have authentic German dishes on it, but be prepared to be a meat eater! Although the menu was only in German, the waiters were able to explain the dishes in English without a problem.
Out of the dishes we had - my favourite was the "Bierbrat", which although sounds like a sausage is anything but. There were two large pieces of roasted pork in a dark gravy and it came with a large potato dumpling. The flavour was amazing and everything was cooked exactly right. We found this wonderful little spot when we were heading to the Dom and happened to go up a tiny wee street. The restaurant is small and cosy - two little rooms off a slightly bigger entrance room, very mediterranean in feel, and when you walk in you can see the chef cooking out in the open. The food was fresh and hot and flavourful - the middle portion is big enough to really fill one up. The staff were very helpful and they speak English so you dont have to worry about not being understood if you don't speak German!
We both went with pasta which was perfectly cooked and fresh from the pan. Busy city centre restaurant with a large beergarden, ideal for us on a warm evening.
Fast and friendly service, food very tasty and beers from the local Innstadt brewery made this an enjoyable evening.
