Prien am Chiemsee is a municipality in the district of Rosenheim in Bavaria. It is situated on the western shore of the Chiemsee lake. We were fortunate to see the Lake Chiemsee when visited Herrenchiemsee in August of 2004.
The Chiemsee lake has the square about 80 square kilometers and is situated in foothill area of Bavaria Chimgau. That is why it is sometimes named the Bavarian sea.
It is located at height of 518 m. Three large islands are available on lake: Herreninsel - man's island, Fraueninsel-female island and Krautinsel - grassy island.
Herrenchiemsee has a palace built by King Ludwig II in 1878, also called Herrenchiemsee, which was never completed but was meant to be a replica of the Palace of Versailles.
The trip began in Prien where we left our car with Asslan v Haus Schiran. When we came back from the Herreninsel we had a pleasnt walk along the shore of the lake. Asslan liked Prien and the lake very much.
This little town is active with tourist all trying to get to the island that has Schloß Herrenchiemsee on it.
There are boats that go about every 20 min. so you have time to look around the town and have some food or drinks.
I love Bavaria! From the people, to the food and the place. This is one part of Germany where I can keep coming back to, over and over again, and still find something new to do (or I keep doing what I like doing too).
Fondest memory: Taking long walk or what they call, "spazieren gehen", through their beautiful forests.
