Regensburg's signature gothic spires by richiecdisc Dom St. Peter is considered the most important Gothic building in Bavaria with impressive 14th and 15th century stained glass windows its main drawing card. Its towering spires are visible from just about anywhere in town and serve as the trademark of the city some refer to as the most northern in Italy. There is a musem of religious art and a treasury containing golden crosses, goblets and other religious artifacts. Leave a Comment Directions: Right in the Domplatz and pretty much visible from anywhere in town.

a work in progress by richiecdisc Regensburg’s Altes Rathaus or Old Town Hall has gone through many incarnations from medieval to baroque and offers tours in English daily at 3:15 but it was such a nice day, we just enjoyed the views of the intricately carved windows bedecked with flowers. Leave a Comment Directions: In the Rathausplatz next to the Tourist Information Office.

second fiddle but impressive by richiecdisc The Neupfarrkirche or Reformed Church was built in1540 and dominates its namesake cafe laden square. The square was a Jewish Ghetto in the middle ages and the church itself was built on the site of a former Synagogue. Leave a Comment Directions: Neupfarrplatz is very close to the Domplatz. The Old Town is quite small and you're bound to get to just about every square if you wander around for a couple hours.

The Old Stone Bridge spans 310 meters over the Danube River and offers breathtaking views of the city. It was built in the 12th century and is a tribute to medieval ingenuity and shows the wealth of the city to undertake such a big project. Leave a Comment Directions: If you find the river, you find the bridge.

by Gili_S This is the main church of Regensburg in the old city. It is just there in the centre of the city, the door was open and Netta wanted to see it also from the inside, so we went in and we saw that it was nice, but quickly we went out to the nice sunshine and blue sky of August summer day. Valhalla from the bike trail by bilgeez Valhalla is the "Hall of Fame" of Germany. As you may know, in German folklore, Valhalla is heaven, the place of the residence of the gods. In this earthly Valhalla, all people who made major contributions to Germany, German Culture and western society are memorialized here, either with plaques, busts or statues. It is a "who's-who" of German history. Among the honored is Albert Einstein, who also is the only Jewish and Naturalized American Citizen to have a place here. There are so many others, I don't have space or memory to place names here, just go and see for yourself! As you can see, the building itself is an almost exact replica of the Parthenon in Athens. It is a monument to the German fascination of tying the mythological world to the real world and vice-versa. Admission a few years ago was about 7DM, so figure today about 4 Euro or so. Leave a Comment Address: North side of Danube, 3km east of RegensburgDirections: Go north from city centre, across stone bridge, follow the signs. One can take a bike trail on the north side of the Danube to the foot of the Monument and walk uphill or take roads to it. It is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Knight on Police Station by bilgeez Huh? Why visit the main police station? Well because of one thing. The current main cop shop has a painting on the side of it of a knight holding a banner. The banner is red, and if one looks closely, one can faintly see the swastika that was painted over to the right centre of the banner. A remnant of the Nazi era. Just thought I'd share this with any WWII era history buffs. Leave a Comment Address: East of city centre might be on Maximillian Str.Directions: Just east of city centre, may be on Maximillian Strasse, don't remember!

by dentremo This Romanesque portal - now protected from the elements by a glass housing - is an entrance to the 12th century Schottenkirche (Scottish church), also known as St. Jakobs. It was built by Irish Benedictine monks in a spot that was at the time outside the city walls. There are fascinating carvings on either side of the portal: Carvings of Mary and Jesus are on the east side of portal (in the direction of Jerusalem), while images of the anti-Christ are on the western side (in the direction of the end of the world). It is interesting to note that the first wave of the 3rd crusade assembled in front of this church began their journey to the east from here. They walked down from the church to some boats that were docked on the bank of the Danube. They only made it about one kilometer before crashing into the Steinerebruecke - I guess they tried again on the next day launching from the other side of the bridge. Address: between Bismarckplz and JakobstorDirections: Go west from Bismarckplatz on Jakobstr. Its on the left.

On Guard! by bilgeez At the Altes Rathaus in Regensburg is a freize with two men who seem to be leaning out of window. One is holding something in his right hand. What is it? it is a rock! It was explained to me that this was placed there in case one of the locals had a few steins too many and decided to vent his feelings about civil politics on the Burghermeister. When he stumbled over to the Rathaus and encountered this scene, it was hoped the fellow would think he was being run off and loose his bravado. Leave a Comment Address: Altes Rathaus, city centre.Directions: City Centre near Alte Steinbruecke

The BMW factory in Regensburg gave tours there on certain days of the week. They may still, it was very interesting. The tour guide spoke excellent English. The plant is south of the city in an industrial area. City buses do go there, but one has to pay the extra fare for a "Fernfahrt" as it is away from the city. Check BMW's website to see if they have tour info. If I find any better info in my "archives" I will add it in here. Leave a Comment Address: South of city in industrial zone.Directions: South of Regensburg.Website: BMW.de
