Das Bratwurstglcoklein: In the old town of Nurnberg

by gordonilla

The restauarnt was located at the entrance to the old town complex, within the Craftsmens Courtyard. I started and ended my day in Nuremberg at this restauarant. It is very traditional and offers a wide range of traditional Bavarian and Nurnberger foodstuffs. In the morning, i had freshly baked pretzels and coffee. They were wonderful. In the evening I had a wonderful warm meal of Nurnberger bratwurst (sausages).

Jagdschloss Thiergarten: First adress - upper class

by elgin99

Upper class restaurant and hotel. Only one word for all: brilliant. Outside of Bavaria, in the middle of a beautiful landscape.Website in English and French, of course. Too much favorite ones that I could tell. BTW, I´m searching for sponsors.... :))

Fischküche Bierbichler: after work play

by richiecdisc

I have always wanted to visit this place so you can imagine how happy I was that when working for Berlitz in Munich I found myself at a one week workshop in Rosenheim. Unfortunately, the hotel and classrooms were miles from the actual city center, where the restaurant was. Besides, all of our food and beer was free at the hotel so I figured I would never make it there. Chance would have it that one of the organizers found out about my love of beer hunting and offered to take a group of us there one night. It was a great old world sort of place with a quaint little beer garden that we put to full advantage. Since we had already eaten a big meal, we were there just for the beer. But it is a tradition in this town to eat fried fish with your Weissebier so hope to get back down there one day for a meal. Their house-brewed weissbier is a refreshing example of the style with a strong yeasty...

Schlossbräukeller: in the region of the hops, Au in der Hallertau

by richiecdisc

This was another example of taking advantage of my monthly train pass while living in Munich. But for any serious beer lover, hallertau hops are considered amongst the very best. Au-in-der-Hallertau is right in the thick of where they are grown so a scenic bus trip worth the small hassle. The restaurant itself looks to have many different faces, depending on what you want. It was too cold for the beer garden when I was there but it looks like the place to sit if you have the chance. In the spartan keller, there was simple seating but it was comfortable enough. It was during the week and the service was a bit slow, especially since the waitress just had to bring me beer. You order your food at a rather expensive self-service counter where you can at least see the tasty looking food. I opted for just some cheese with a pretzel that did go well with the local beers. Their Helles and...

Brauereigasthof Maierbrau: watch the flies

by richiecdisc

I had a monthly train pass that allowed me to travel anywhere in a 45-minute radius of Munich so I took full advantage of it. I headed out to this little village with a colleague from Berlitz one afternoon for a late lunch. There was little more than the main square in this one-horse town and it seemed the brewery was THE main focal point of that. We sat outside despite a slight smell of manure but soon found that flies were more of a nuisance than the odor. The service was great by Bavarian standards. Maybe go when the crops are still growing. ;) I had a nice plate of kalterbraten (thinly sliced cold roast pork) for 6.40 Euros and tried a number of beers including a Helles, Zwickle and an especially tasty Dunkles.

Liebhard's Braustuberl zu Aying: a nice rural setting

by richiecdisc

There is a more upscale restaurant across the road, but this little pub has a great if small beer garden that on busy days (not when we were there) offers a cheap self-service area. There are lots of shady trees which is a real plus on a hot summer day after the walk from the train station. We had brought our own food, thinking it was a true beer garden but soon realized that with the self-service area close, we had to deal with a waitress. Since we had come mostly to try Ayinger’s famed Celebrator Dopplebock, we just ordered a mass (liter-mug) of that each and coyly ate the pretzels we had brought. The bock is a very tasty though dangerously strong brew. It has a firm roasty palate with a bittersweet chocolate finish.

Zum Freischutz: just up the road from the smoky pub

by richiecdisc

This was another alternative to the Firmer pub up the street. I decided to drop in for a beer and found a slightly more upscale though even cozier place. It was atmospherically woody and lot of people seemed to be enjoying the food. Did I say “Old World?” Well, it was. I was stuffed from my meal up the street so I just settled into some of the beers from the local Helm brewery. The Helles was not as good as WIttman but their Dunkles was an interesting of roasty bitterness and tart overtones in the finish. It was pretty packed so sure the food is great too.

Gasthof Firmer: sometimes it's okay to eat in a smoke-filled pub

by richiecdisc

Beyond circumstances of any normal person’s control, I arrived in Landshut well after the sun had set. I wasted a good portion of the day hunting beers in Altotting and Neutotting and came away with very little to show for it. So, I was starving and thirsty and had less time than I might have. But I found this great little place by merely looking for someone that served the local Wittman beers on tap. I walked into a smoky room full of locals having their evening beers. I wondered if I had made the right move but all concerns vanished when the friendly waitress plopped down a cheap tasty Helles beer in front of me. I had the daily special for 5.90, which was a big plate of schweinebraten (roast pork) with dumplings that was tasty and well up to the task of pairing with the excellent local brews. Not only did they have a nice Helles beer but their Dunkles was a roasty dry treat as well....

Tegernsee Braustuberl: Tegernsee

by richiecdisc

Tegernsee is justifiably one of the most popular of the Munich region lakes though we found Schliersee more tranquil and scenic. You can easily see both in one long day from Munich if you utilize the BOB day train pass for 17 Euros. Up to five people can use the lines all day. If you do go to Tegernsee, you must stop by the riverside Kloster that is impossible to miss. As well as a beautiful example on monastic architecture, there is a cavernous beer hall there that serves up good tasty food and their own home brewed beers. We got there pretty late in the day and had eaten twice already so we just had a snack with our beers. Doreen had a great potato soup full of sausages (not for veggies, Steve) and I had hacktoast (raw pork with spices on toast). I did not expect much in the beer department as I had had their Helles in Munich a few times and found it bland. What I found was a great...
