Weissbrauerei Braustuberl: on the way back from Schliesee

by richiecdisc

Miesbach is charming little tourist town on the way to Schliesee and worth a stop for a meal and stroll if you have the time. It also is home to Hopf, one of the more renowned brewers of weissbier in Bavaria. I was disappointed to find its main outlet in town had been taken over by a rival brewer so I had to use my nose to find this little place that served most of the Hopf beers. This is a good example of coming for beer and finding food. We had a great plate of Kalterbraten (thinly sliced cold roast pork) that was huge and maybe the best I've ever had. Their basic weissbiers I had before and they are good though not outstanding. My biggest disappointment was the weizenbock. This is a rare strong style of wheat beer that I normally love but this example was far too sweet with very little head or carbonation. I hope to try it again to see if this bottle was off but other than that, this...

Bräustüberl Hausham: on the way to Schliersee

by richiecdisc

One of the great pleasures of living in Munich is the close proximity to mountain lakes like Tegernsee and Schliesee. You can reach them easily by car or train and make stops along the way in quaint little villages. Hausham is worth a peak if only to stop in this great little brewery. It is literally right across from the train station so not a problem to stop for lunch on the way down. It is a sparkling clean combination of a modern pub with a Bavarian Inn and offers great value and friendly service. I came primarily to sample their heralded weissbier but was happy we decided to eat here as well. We both opted for the lunch special which is always a good thing to do in Bavaria. It was pork in a cream sauce over dumplings. It was only 5.90 Euros and we were surprised to find it included a half-liter of beer each! The weizen did not disappoint, being a nice combination of fruit and spice...

Brauereigasthof Winkler: Another Amberg brewery

by richiecdisc

It was a rainy dreary day in Amberg and it was just a day trip to try some beers so this cozy little Bavaria pub/brewery did just the trick. It was decked out in lots of wood and it was warm and welcoming. The waitress was very friendly by Bavarian standards and served up some great local dishes at great prices. Doreen had a nice spanferkel (baby roast pig) with dumplings for 7.50 Euros and I took the daily special for 4.50. They had a decent Helles and tasty Hefeweizen as well as a Dopplebock that had hints of dried fruit before a drying bittersweet finish. Not as good as Bruckmuller but still worth a try.

Brauerei Bruckmüller: Not Bamberg, Amberg

by richiecdisc

This was a nice combination of modern brewery and cosy old Bavarian Inn and though it was empty when we visited, you could imagine it gets very busy during the summer. Another reason for the empty room was it was in between serving times for food. It is typical in northern Bavaria to serve food only at lunch and dinner. It being in the middle of the afternoon, we could not try what looked like great food from the menu. But they rustled up some cold food since we were trying so many of their beers! We had a home baked bread with goose fat for a little over three Euros. The beers were all very tasty and included a Helles, Keller, Pils, Dunkles, and Marzen. The Pils was one of the most visually appealing beers I've had in Germany, served in a narrow tale glass with an amazing rocky head. The Dunkles was creamy and roasty, with a very long dry finish. The Marzen, a rare malty style, was one...

Kloster Reutberg: now, the reason to go to Holzkirchen

by richiecdisc

If you go to Holzkirchen and have the time, you should head out to Kloster Reutberg. In fact, this place is worth going to Holzkirchen in itself. Unfortunately, it is not so easy to get to without a car. There is a 13-km one-way bike/walking path from Holzkirchen train station. Alternatively, a bus makes the 15-minute trip M-F at 11:04 and 14:04 for about 2 Euros. The Kloster is quite scenically situated in the rolling foothills of the Alps and its beer garden must have one of the best views of any in Bavaria. Though I went for the beer, I was very surprised at how good the food was. I had the rollerbraten (pork with a healthy crunchy piece of fat on top) with potato salad for 8.80 Euros. That is not all that cheap but it was a good portion and delicious. You will need to eat something sturdy if you want to try all of their beers. I had not only a tasty Helles, Dunkles and Weissbier,...

Sigwart Braustuberl: another Weissenburg brewery

by richiecdisc

This is a bustling little pub and the more popular of the city’s breweries. Though I found the beers not quite up to par with Schneider Brau’s, they were still quite good and worth a try. With a location right on the main square, you should not pass it up. I knew I would eat again at Scnheider Brau so I opted for some Hackbrot (2.50 Euros). This is raw pork meat mixed with a variety of spices on bread. It sounds strange but it has become one of my very favorite foods in Germany. After sampling the Helles and Dunkles, I ordered the Stadwurst mit Kraut (4.10 Euros), a local sausange with saurkraut. I then had tasty Dunkleweizen and ill-named Pils. The Helles was a bit bland and found that the Pils, while not bitter enough for the style, would make a good Helles. The Dunkles was the best of the lot and turns out it was a guest beer from another brewery! lol Still, it's a nice place to eat...

Zur Kanne Schneiderbrau: not even friends in Bavaria had heard of it

by richiecdisc

The city of Weissenburg was an unexpected treasure. I had gone strictly to visit the town's two breweries but was surprised to find a beautiful medievial city, much of it still walled with some picturesque gates to boot. Unfortunately, my camera was not working so I have no photos. The brewery itself was typical Bavarian put with many locals enjoying the local brews and food. It was cosy and the waitress was very helpful and even spoke English. This is very helpful in this part of Bavaria where the Franconian dialect is all but indecipherable. Even though I had eaten at the Sigwart Brewery just up the road, I ordered a cold plate of Franconian specialties as I had a few beers to try and always best to have German beer paired with local foods. It was huge and full of different hams, liverwurst, and local cheeses. I tried their Helles, Pils, Dunkles, and Marzen. All were quite tasty...

Maisach Braustuberl: one of the regions greatest breweries

by richiecdisc

Sometimes a quest for great beer leads to a real gem of a restaurant. Maisach is a case in point. I had read that it was home to some of driest and most bitter beers in the Munich region so I knew it was on my agenda. What I found was a true Bavarian restaurant occupied by locals who know not only where to find great beer, but great food too. It is a huge place with lots of different types of rooms. Our favorite is a cosy one right next to the bar. It is full of brewery memorabilia and there is even a brewery museum in the basement. I had a great schnitzel stuffed with ham and cheese with a side of potato salad for 9.80 Euros and on another occasion, the duck for a little more. Both meals were huge and very well prepared. They have a host of beers on tap, including a great helles, pils and weissbier. But their truely great beer is a very tasty dunkles beer that goes well with all their...

Weissbrau Deisenhofen: on the way back to Munich

by richiecdisc

The restaurant looked nice enough from the outside but it was a gorgeous day so I sat in the very lovely beer garden. Having already eaten at Kloster Reutberg, I was just here to try their weissbier. It was a very pleasant setting and a relaxing place for yet another beer. I picked up some pretzels on my way from the train station as I love them with weissbier. The home brewed weizen was a tasty example of the style and I was pretty jaded at this point, having been to a few breweries already!

Zum Oberbrau: a step by step beer tasting

by richiecdisc

While Oberbrau is noted for their weissbier, I would say their food would be a better reason for making the trip from Munich. The village it is located in, Holzkirchen, is a charming enough place for a day trip and is a transit hub for lots of scenic as well as beery locations. The restaurant is a nice combination of rustic and modern and the outside seating offers a nice view of the main square and is recommended in sunny weather. We had the Holzfallersteak for 7.80 Euros and it was not only tasty but a very big portion. I sampled six different beers and have to say I was a bit disappointed in all of them. The Dunkleweisse was about the best of the lot. They were not bad beers, but they seemed to have an odd finish and were not overly tasty. I have had their weissbiers in a bottle before and they seemed fine so I would not condemn the place. As stated, it’s a great place for a meal if...
