Konditorei Kreutzkamm: Hmmm, yummy cakes and more

by globetrott

This is one of the very best (and unfortunately also most expensive ) places I remember for delicate cakes, pastries and sweets. "Baumkuchen" is their most favorite cake :It is hard to explain, as the cake is somehow backed around a stick, and thin layers of cake follow thin layers of chocolate, and finally, when you take out the middle-stick and cut the cake it looks like a trunk of a tree with plenty of year-rings."Hefezopf" , "Dredner Stollen" "Mohnstrudel" were my other favorits - much more expensive than anywhere else, and also much better.

Kaufhof - Selfservice-restaurant: one of the best views on Munich is free

by globetrott

In Kaufhof on Karlsplatz / Stachus you may go by lift or escalators to the 6th floor, where you ahve a great self-service-restaurant with a great view on Karlsplatz,Frauenkirche and a lot more. What makes me angry every time I am there is the fact, they charge quite a lot, when you want to powder your nose... The food there is really great, and what is the best for the tourists - most dishes are shown with photos, so you see in advance, what to expect, even if your German is not so very good.Potatoes, rice etc will be ready, but mostly the meat will be prepared freshly in front of your eyes. They also have a great variety of cakes and icecreams in the afternoon and every day they have a cheap meal and a cheap "cake&coffe-offer"

Beim Sedlmayr: another traditional inn

by globetrott

Beim Sedlmayr is a nice restaurant in Bavarian style. It once belonged to Walter Sedlmayr and was opened just a short time before he was murdered.(more about this great Bavarian actor under "general tips") This is a place where ordinary people go and sometimes even Bavarian Schiki-Mickies...Prices are about average and the food is fine !Open :Mo-Fr 09.00 a.m.-10:00 p.m.Sa 08:00 a.m.-04:00p.m.closed on Sundays !

Hofbräuhaus - Schwemme: Oans - Zwoa, Gsuffa

by globetrott

This is what you will see, when you will not walk up 1 stair in Hofbräuhaus, but simply walk in:"Schwemme" is the official name for this place, where people get their beer and a more simply kind of food, than on the floors above. In my opinion this place looks wonderful, when you are able to see these arcades shortly before they close, and when you are lucky and the porter will still let you in for a picture.During the day they have some music there, loud and drunken people, it has a certain smell and dust...

Fisch Witte on Viktualienmarkt Munich: When it swims, we have it...

by globetrott

Viktualienmarkt is the very best ( and most expensive )place to buy any kind of food.Everything is delivered freshly every day, and all the famous cooks of the jet-set-restaurants in Munich will buy their food there. All sorts of fishes are available, fresh to prepare at home, or to taste directely there at the bar.

Tip Photo
Bratwurstglöckle: maybe the best saussage in the world

by globetrott

Bratwurstglöckle is my favorite place to get some Bratwurst or other sausages on Oktoberfest. In general any kind of food is really expensive on Oktoberfest, so be prepared to pay more than normally.

Augustiner: In the very centre of Munich

by globetrott

Augustiner is one of the most beautiful traditional inns in Munich. It is situated in the pedestrian area and has this wonderful " beergarden " in the back of the building.I was there in october, and it was a bit too cold to sit outside, but in summer it will be hard to get any of these tables. The local food with Knödel and a fresh beer

Tip Photo
Waldwirtshaft: evening jazz ....at Waldwirtschaft

by richiecdisc

One of Munich's prettiest beer gardens with a nice twist; they feature jazz bands on weekends. It's in an exclusive suburb in Munich and the prices reflect it but well worth it to see all the beautiful people enjoying a lovely summer's evening. I was very disappointed on my first visit here as I had read so much about the beer garden and arrived only to find it closed. I ate in the outside section of the restaurant and it was very over priced, with the smallest portion of O'batzn I've ever seen ringing in at 7.50 Euros. On my return trip, a few weeks later, I found the garden in full swing and I enjoyed more reasonably priced (though still not cheap!) snacks and Spaten's maibock was still flowing. Best of all, the jazz band was in full swing too! :)

Forschungsbraustuberl: some of the best beer in Munich

by richiecdisc

Out in the suburbs of Munich, you get a feel for life out of the city and get to sample the best beers too. The owners are beer researchers for the big breweries in the winter and open this brewpub only from mid -March until mid-October. They have the best O'batzen, a cheesy concoction that is washed down and even overshadowed by perhaps the best everyday drinking beer in Munich, the delectable Pilsissimus Export. D had a nice cold plate of roast pork. I found the prices a bit higher on my last visit and the portions are not so big anymore, but still well worth going for the beer if nothing else.

Tip Photo
Andechs Monastery: Monastery anyone?

by richiecdisc

This sprawling complex is dominated by a monastery but the vaulted ceilings in the pub and the scenic beer garden packs them in too. They have a great self service restaurant and all the Bavarian classics on offer. I love their O'batzn with either pretzels or dark bread. Their dopplebock is perhaps the finest made and no better place to sample it than from their massive wooden barrels.
