Menterschwaige: with a little help from our friends....

by richiecdisc

This was not on my list of beer gardens to see but D's friends wanted to take us here and it was close to where Peter worked so we went much to my chagrin. As it turned out, it was a great place and as you can see we enjoyed ourselves immensely. Peter was great and dropped us off at Waldwirtshaft afterwards and said he only wished he wasn't so tired from work so he could go too. It was a bit over-priced but it was a great place and the food was certainly good. The Lowenbrau Dunkles was tasty too.

Heide Volm: ya gotta go in May to get the Maibock

by richiecdisc

This was my favorite beer garden on my most recent trip to Munich. It's a lovely and classic example of the style, with big leafy trees, great self service food stands, and huge mugs of Hacher-Pschorr beer to wash it all down with. I had a quite reasonable meal of Schweinebraten (roast pork) inside for 8.60 Euros on my first trip as it was not nice out, but on a return visit, I found the best place (and cheapest) to eat is outside. All typcial bavarian treats are on offer including huge pretzels and liter mugs of beer. It was maibock season so the golden bock beer was on tap. It's deceptively strong and full of malt and hops for a lip-smacking taste. Hint: go in May! Beer and food are much cheaper than at many of the other big beer gardens too.

Hotel Ludwig der Bayer.: Yet another Monastic gem.....

by richiecdisc

This atmospheric pub with vaulted ceilings is right in the shadow of the 14th century monastery complex that includes its own brewery. Klosterbrau Ettal Dunkel is a heavenly dark lager with a dry malty palate.

Brauereigaststatte Lindenbrau: down the road apiece....

by richiecdisc

A great village pub with wooden interior and the smallest cutest beer garden I have ever seen. I actually found this after I mistakenly had their beer in a pub around the corner. Hey, with no map of the city and a tired girlfriend driving me around, I just jumped at the first sign I saw. The beer was quite good and wished I had it here but no use in crying over spilled beer. ;)

Gasthofbrauerei Hufeisen: not what it used to be....

by richiecdisc

A quaint little village brewery that was too packed to get into for dinner but was a nice place for a quiet chat latter on in the evening. We didn't eat here but came only to sample their dunkles beer but from the looks of the people waiting to get in, the food must be good. I was here in 1997 and they had a really great dunkles beer but it appears it has gone by the wayside with a much more bland interpretation in its place along with a cloying weissbier.

Brau-Gaststatte Gambrinus: small village prices mean huge portions....

by richiecdisc

This was to be a typcial place that I might not want to bring Doreen into, but it was time to eat lunch and we were both starved. Despite being a small village pub, we didn't feel funny walking in and it was a very nicely furnished little place. The barman was helpful and right on the ball getting beers too. I had the Steigerwaldplatte, which was a massive plate of home-butchered Franconian meaty delights. The pressack was particularly tasty and a real Franconian specialty. At only 4.40 Euros, it was a real bargain and went well with the house-brewed Lagerbier on tap. Doreen had an equally massive salad that I had to finish for her. :=)
