One of Germany's oldest pharmacies is the MARIEN-APOTHEKE located in the Marktplatz. This wonderful half-timbered structure, one of Rothenburg's most beautiful patrician houses, is the JAGSTHEIMER HOUSE, built in 1488 for Mayor Jagstheimer and features a picturesque oriel window under which is a statue of Mary and Child. They carry a variety of pharmacy products and cosmetics. Schneeballen - a traditional desert in Rothenburg by globetrott Konditorei Striffler was the 1st bakery in Rothenburg, that started to produce these cakes back in the year 1925. Snowballs are still produced freshly every day there. BUT be careful, before buying a large number of them, they are really hard and need some tricks to be eaten. I had one with just cinnemon and sugar, and it was quite hard work to break out smaller parts, I could eat. Those snowballs, covered with chocolate will get you terribly sticky fingers...
Schneeballen (Snowballs) are a traditional desert of the area and you may see them in almost any Konditorei / Confectionery in Rothenburg ob der Tauber . The principal of such a snowball are wide stripes of a special - quite hard dough consisting of plenty of eggs, cream and plum-brandy - and many of such stripes will be gathered in the shape of a snowball before baking them. Click on my link below and learn more about it on the webpage of that Konditorei Striffler, you may even order Schneeballen there online...
Schneeballen are about 1,80 Euro each for the size on my picture Leave a Comment Theme: Food and DrinkAddress: D-91541 Rothenburg Untere Schmiedgasse 1Phone: +49 (0)9861-6788Directions: Untere Schmiedgasse is in a distance of 200 meters from Marktplatz, when you walk to Siebersturm (the towngate you may see on almost every postcard) See also the map on the webpage of Konditorei Stiffler !Website: http://www.romanticroad.com/striffler/english/shop.htm Other Contact: Fax +49 (0)9861-6733

buy an iron shirt... by globetrott This shop in Herrengasse 12 was the best one that I saw in Rothenburg, where you may buy an iron armoury. B.t.w. the one on my picture is 1290 Euros, and I am not even sure that this is a confortable one... The shop is open Monday-Friday : 09.00a.m.-12.00noon + 02.00p.m.-06.00p.m. Saturday 09.00a.m. - 04.00p.m. and even on sunday : 11.00a.m. - 04.00p.m.
They have quite a good choice of iron amouries, similar shop I saw so far only in Prague.
1290 Euros for the big iron armouy on my picture. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: Herrengasse 12Directions: Herrengasse 12 - this is just opposite of Hotel Eisenhut

Terracotta Replicas of Rothenburg-houses by globetrott Plenty of shops all over Rothenburg offer such buildings and , because so many tourists from Japan and USA will come to Rothenburg, you may also get your purchase sent home by mail.
When you click on my picture, you may see a big choice of small replicas of the famous buildings of Rothenburg ob der Tauber . Most of these houses may be lighted from inside and make a great decoration at home.
The price depends of course on the size and I saw nice ones alraedy for around 40 Euros. Leave a Comment Theme: Toys and GamesAddress: D-91541 Rothenburg/Untere SchmiedgasseDirections: I saw this shop in Untere Schmiedgasse, opposite of Konditorei Striffler.

The stores walls by chodearm Mission number one when it came to shopping was to get ourselves an authentic Cuckoo Clock since we were quite close to the black forest. An ovject of this nature would be a constant reminder with every "koo-koo" of the bird. The selection process was quite hard in that I didn't know what I was exactly looking for. The owners of the store were very helpful, all spoke fluent english and thouroughly explained the different styles. We ended up with a classic HUNTER STYLE. Since most people purchasing are tourist's, they will ship to your home so you don't have to hand carry this fragile piece.
Cuckoo Clocks and Beer Steins
For the clock 200$ plus.... Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: Rothenburg ob der Tauber, GermanyDirections: When looking at the Rathaus in the town square go to the right side than look to your right the store will be semi-behind the Rathaus.

by chodearm I friggin love beer. As a child a sip would sicken me. Grandpa would let me take a swig of the Schlitz and the repulsiveness of taste made me vow "I will never drink beer" This will be overturned to my mothers dismay. I also thought girls were icky, Uncle Ricky's Kiss Posters were scarey and the White Kidnapping Van was coming to get me. As my thoughts evolved as did my tastebuds. I am quite proud of what they now accept. From beating fish hearts, to fried frog legs, they now know what taste is about. The distaste in Schlitz still stands bold, but for reasons of bad brewing not for the single reason that it was BEER.
NYC has the BIG APPLE as its identity symbol. Germany should have a BEER STEIN as it's symbol.
66 euros..it says it right there. Leave a Comment Theme: Gifts

Go to any bakery in RODT and select your choice of Schneeball. If you go to a bakery called 'Diller's' (and apparently there are a few of them around town), you will certainly get a wide variety of Schneeball to sample (chcolate covered, cinnamon, powder sugar, speckled, etc), and these are all machine-made, I am told. Other bakeries sell hand-made. My take on this particular foodstuff is this: a Schneeball is the product of leftover pastry cut from pies, etc and fisted up into a ball, then deep fried briefly before being coated with various sweet concoctions. It is generally a firm pastry, therefore a firm bite is needed. I nibbled, slowly, taking 2 days to finish one Schneeball at various tea times. My hotel staff advised me that Diller's bakeries produce machine-made Schneeballs, but you can also purchased the hand-made ones as well at other bakeries (so decide if you want authentic or not!). The dough itself was quite bland, it was the coating that made it slightly more interesting. It's a must to try in this city, but be prepared to take your time eating it. Around 2.20 euro at time of this printing (April 2008).
