Drive from Wurzburg to Fussen & Munich

Too many tourists in Rothenburg during the day can be escaped by renting a car for one day and driving all the beautiful Romantic Road (Romantische Strasse) towns from Dinkelsbuhl to Fussen in one day, then returning to Rothenburg for dinner and the evening walking the city.

Train from Cologne to Rothenburg ob der Tauber cost us 24.5 euro/ea. This was in Sept 2012.Trip was routed Cologne - Frankfurt - Wurzburg - Steinach - Rothenburg, consisted of 5 different trains and took about 4 hrs. trains were prompt, clean, three of them were ICE or high speed express trains, very fast, quiet and comfortable. It was a very pleasant experience and the price seemed quite reasonable. We purchased the tickets online weeks in advance. Keep in mind that you will be lugging your luggage up and down a LOT of stairs if traveling by train with many connections.

    The Romantische Strasse

In March 2002 I did a small part of the Romantische Strasse. This page is part of that route. The Romantische Strasse is a beautiful route through the south of Germany, between Würzburg and Füssen. On the map you can see where the Romantische Strasse exactly is. My travelpages about this beautiful route in the south of Germany are : Rothenburg, Dinkelsbuhl, Nördlingen and Füssen

But besides these villages/cities, there are a lot more gorgeous places along the romantische strasse.
Here is an overview of all these cities, with links to the several websites.

Taxi service from or to the train station.

by charlesracine Updated Aug 29, 2009

If you come by train there are two taxi services; Taxi Kersten Tel: 09861/ 95100 and Taxi Ebert Tel. 09861/ 7227. Also there are hotels within 100 meters of the train station. One can use www.bahn.de and check out out and the distance the hotels are are from the station. bahn.de service also has good hotel prices. Also, www.hrs.com is very good too.

    Walking around

The medieval area in not a big place so you can walk around in a little time - you can walk from side to side in 20 minutes so with walking and enjoying the place it is not more than 2-3 hours

When arriving to Rothenburg ob der Tauber you will find close parking lots just outside the walls.
All the parking lots are well signed and not too crowded.
You will see directions to the parking lots while arriving to the city.

    Horse and carriage

by ophiro Written Mar 9, 2014

Inside the gates it is problematic to use a car so a nice way to travel around is horse and carriage.
I don't know the price of this transportation but i am sure it is not very expensive and a nice thing to do.

    Getting around...

by CandS Written Apr 11, 2003

Once you are at Rothenburg you can walk everywhere. The tour guide that took us around walked very fast too so be ready for it! ;)

You won't have any problems getting around on foot and you will see a lot more that way also.

    Our Eurail Ticket...after a beating...

We took the train from Munich to Rothenburg (and back again) as a day trip using our Eurail ticket. It took just over 4 hours to get there. The scenery was amazing along the way... :)

    Freedom

by tuff Updated Oct 18, 2007

The best way to Rothenburg is by car. Nothing beats the freedom of having a car with a navigator on the country side. However, I did have the burden of having a car when I am in the big cities.

    Horse and carriage

by Sjalen Written Dec 14, 2004

The carriage tours in Rothenburg were surprisingly cheap (at €8 a person when I was there) but then they do use carriages big enough for many, not the romantic types.
