The numerous lakes, both large and small, have given the east part of the Allgau where Neuschwanstein is located the name of "Ostallgauer Seenplatte" (literally, a lowland plain with many lakes).
From Neuschwanstein there is a splendid view at Alpsee. It nestles between wooded mountain slopes in an area of un spoilt natural beauty. Even as a child, Ludwig particularly loved the romantic lake.
Today there are many hiking trails in the vicinity of Alpsee. On almost all of them the walker is following in the steps of the king. A circular path leads round the shore which is more or less in its natural state and is protected as a nature reserve.
When I was going to visit Hohenschwangau, I examined in Internet hundreds various photos. However I have not seen the image of Neuschwanstein from the Alpsee. Therefore I consider my photos from the lake as my success.

75 meters of water falls deserves close watching.
From the Pollat Canyon, where water roars it's music; the Castle appeared so silent and quiet - like a sleeping Giant.

There is the little Schwansee (Swan Lake) in the middle of the former garden of Hohenschwangau, only a short walk away from the Neuschwanstein castle. The setting of this sleepy lake, which is picturesquely surrounded by the wooded Allgäuer Alps, is particularly attractive.
This lake is not such deep as Alpsee, therefore it is warmer. It's good for bathing and swimming. Such rest is especially pleasant, as the beautiful castle of Neuschwanstein is visible on the distance.*

This is the place, where the bus from Schwangau will take you, and you simply have to walk on 200 meters.
On my pic that bridge is seen from the castle, and so you may also see the small alpine-river underneath, falling down the "Pöllatschlucht" ( a gorge ) Leave a Comment

 Hotel - Restaurant Alatsee by globetrott
It is rather small, but several hundred meters deep, as it is an old vulcanic crater.
On top the water is cristall clear, BUT in a depth of about 10 meters the density of the water changes, you will almost not see anything, as dead trees and leaves are swimming there, building some sort of fence against the deeper parts.
Diving with machinery is forbidden there, as the area still holds plenty of relicts of WW II, when this whole area was "Top secret" and used for V II - rocket experiments.
Some people still search for treasures that were hidden in that area, shortly before the war was over...

It will be on your way to Oberammergau and Linderhof or Garmisch.
Once again : a great parking and a church without entrance-fee, open all day for the public...
...and lots of great shopping-opportunities for Local beer and beer-souvenirs, Klosterlikör ( liquor made in the monastery...)

 Schloss Herrenchiemsee by globetrott
It is about 80 Km from Fuessen, on a small island in Chiemsee.
Herrenchiemsee was finished from outside and has a perfect garden with great fountains around it.
INside it looks great , too but was not completely finished, as the king's wishes were finally too expensive...
