    Walking to Schnau am Knigssee

I would recommend walking to Schönau am Königssee. It's only 4.5 km away from Berchtesgaden and well marked.
You get to pass by many fun traditional little homes on the way and the views of the countryside are outstanding.

    St. Bartholowmew Chapel

The chapel and the hunting lodge

The chapel is only accesable by boat and dates originally from 1134.
Next to the chapel is the royal former hunting lodge of the Kings of Bavaria where you can now grab a nice bit to eat in a restaurant.
There are hiking trails behind the chapel and hunting lodge leading to the Eiskapelle (a dome-like ice cavern that doesn't thaw in the summer).
One way to the chapel takes 35 mins. on the boat service.

    Use the Konigsee Boat Service

by Peterodl Written Sep 1, 2005

One of the electric boats on the Konigsee

The Konigsee iis 8 km long, up to 1250 m wide and 190 m deep.
The boating service has been using electric boats since 1909, perserving the pristine quality of the lake.
The Konigsee is supposedly so clean, you can drink from it.
You will pass the Echo Point on the lake where a bugaler on the boat will play a song and you can hear 1-2 echos. In the old days, a black powder hand cannon was shot off and 7-8 echos could be heard.
There are constant narrations provided (auf Deutsch only) but English pamplets are available.
The boat service runs every 30 min.

    Nicest location in Berchtesgaden

by codrutz Written Jul 11, 2005

Schonau am Konigsee must have the nicest location in Berchtesgaden National Park. It is surrounded by mountains and the multitude of pensions with flowers at balconies shows that is a preffered place for german families to spend their holidays.

    Salet & the Obersee

    The Obersee

When you take the boat trip in Schönau, take the long one upto Salet. It's a sort of hop-on-hop-off and you can get off at St. Bartholomä first, then take another boat to Salet (or vice-versa).
Salet is at the other end of the lake, surrounded by the mountains and the pastures with grazing cows.
When you walk 15 min. you reach the lovely Obersee, a very small emerald-green lake embedded between the mountains amongst which the Teufelshörner, 2360m.

    St. Bartholomä

    The towers of the church

When you take the boat tour in Schönau, you will see, long before the boat anchors, the picturesque pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä, the "Wallfahrtskirche". The church has bright right wooden towers (round domes in fact). The reflection of the white church with the red towers in the green lake is so very beautiful, that it almost made me cry.
St. Bartholomä itself is a small peninsula with the church, the former castle (which is a restaurant now), the fisher-house (fish-smoking), the ship hut at the lake, the Meierhof and the hunter house.
It's a great area for walking.

    On top of Mt. Jenner

Take the cablecar up to Mt. Jenner.
It starts in Schönau am Königssee (600m alt.) and you can ride either to the Mittelstation (1200m) or to the Bergstation (1800m).
If your condition isn't too bad you can hike back down.
Stunning views on the top !!

    The Echo of the Königssee

    Boatswoman with trumpet

The Königssee is a fjord-like embedded emerald-green lake, 8 km long, upto 1.2 km wide and upto 190m deep!
Special is the world-famous Königssee ECHO. The boats(wo)man will play the trumpet when the boat is in the middle of the lake and you will hear the echo from all sides. Magical!
The boats that are used are electrical, so no noise and no air pollution.
Boat tours start in the centre of Schönau. Ticket shop in front of the gangway.

Schonau am Konigsee is the place where i would return in an instant to walk on those green fields and reach the high mountains. Pictures can't show the real relaxation that this landscape gives you.

I know I would come back here for a week, with this kind of view on my balcony. You definitely have to stay at the Maria's Mooslehen pension and breathe the fresh air.
