Hiking in the Bavarian Alps

by Florida999

Lots of people go hiking in Bavaria. We were surprised by how many people were walking up and down the mountains. If the weather is nice, the area is great for hiking. There are so many nice trails it is hard to decide where to go. Almost all of them have some Alm on the way ( with a restaurant, so you can have a beer....). Hiking in the Alps is very different from hiking in a National Park in the U.S. for example. There are so many more people hiking in the Alps. In the U.S. , you can hike in some areas and never see a single other person for miles, here, you run into someone frequently it seemed like, whereever you hike. In a way that is comforting, since you are never away from "civilization", in a way it's sort of annoying, since you can't get away from civilization. But, overall it was enjoyable.

bobsled and luge in the Ice-canal

by globetrott

Kunsteisrennrodel-und Bobbahn Königssee is a great place to go during wintertime ! It is the Ice-canal, built for the training of the German team of the bobsled and luge-champions, it starts high up in the mountains and ends just a few meters off the Koenigssee in Schoenau.AND at the same track, where the world-champions are going down for their training, you may go down yourself, as a part of such a team, you simply have to register at the tourist-office of Schoenau am Koenigsee.1 ride with an experienced bobsled-world-champion and 3 guests is just 30 euros a person You wont need any special equipment except some gloves against the icy winds. The whole run is about 1300 meters, the difference in elevation is 110 meters...click here for the web-cams of the bobsled-racing-track

Elefantentreffen Motor Skiing

by marco2005

If you are a real biker, one who think that running on the snow maybe not hard enough... at the Elefantentreffen you can partecipate to the speed contest with a skiers tied at your tail.To win you have to pass over your skiier by one lap.If you are a skier, tired about skiing down the slope... at the Elefantentreffen you can be invited to rest holding a rope well tied to the tail of a motorcycle. Be aware that when you hear a roaring noise it is supposed that you hold the rope with all your vim. Basically what you need is a rope.

Hiking

by tessy

Hiking is possible everythere. Be sure to have a good map. I always buy a map of Kompass. There are possibilities for hiking in the valley, near the lakes, but also in the mountains, climbing ....To say the truth. We didn't make the whole hiking tour this time, only the last few miles up on the top of the Herzogstand. But it was great anyway! Be sure to have good shoes!

Ski Jumping

by tessy

We wanted to visit a ski jumping stadion - better going there during the championships. But being there in november allowed us to climb up the 4 different ski jumping hills! Wow, it was very impressive. Be sure, I wouldn't have the couage to jump down there.

Canoeying

Canoeying and biking in the Altmuehltal There are lots of places where you can rent a canoe or a bike. Just depends on the distance you wanna do. For us, the river was a little bit too quiet, we hard to paddle hard to make a distance.

SAILING on Chiemsee

by globetrott

Chiemsee is certainly the best place to go sailing and windsurfing in Bavaria !The largest yacht-port is in Prien, where boats may also be rented. Be prepared of quite strong winds sometimes !Do not forget to enjoy the great apline panorama :The mountains in the back are around Salzburg and Berchtesgaden.

Hiking is a great sport!

by richiecdisc

Bavaria offers lots of great hiking opportunities from the Alps in the south to the Rhon and Frankische Schweiz in the north. Besides good walking shoes and rain proof gear, it's always good to pack some food in case you find a nice place like these ruins for a picnic.
