Things to Do

Hike to Riederstein

Hike to Riederstein, Tegernsee

travelfrosch Says:  A fine and scenic hike from Tegernsee is the path to the chapel of Riederstein. The beginning part of the trail winds its way along the ridge for spectacular views of the lake and town as you ascend. The trail isn't too difficult (and arguably even stroller-friendly) until...

Ride the Lake Boats

Ride the Lake Boats, Tegernsee

travelfrosch Says:  Let's face it: You came to Tegernsee to see the Tegernsee, right? What better way to see the lake than board a lake boat? For a round-trip tour, you have two choices: A "large round trip" on Line A or B (a large boat, food and drink available, bicycles allowed aboard, a...

Stroll Along the Lake

Stroll Along the Lake, Tegernsee

travelfrosch Says:  A fine excuse to fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way is to stroll along the lake shore. You can gaze out at the lake and watch the boats go by, or look inland and enjoy the decorated buildings. There are plenty of restaurants, shops and cafes available should your...

View of Tegernsee

View of Tegernsee, Tegernsee

Bigjones Says:  You can take a cable-car from the Tegernsee valley to the summit, the Wallberg mountain, which offers spectacular views. On top, you can make a short hike around (you can climb up to a small shrine) and it's possible to hike back down to the base station (+/- 1,5 hours).

hike up to wallberg.

cachaseiro Says:  the hike to wallberg is a very scenic hike that is just long enough to make you sweat.the views from wallberg are very good and there is a cable car that you can take down if you don´t feel like walking back.wallberg is also a ski resort in the winter, but i have only been...

The towns

The towns, Tegernsee

Henkster Says:  The towns on Tegernsee are typically Bavarian and very beautiful. Many wealthy people live on this lake.

The Lake Tegernsee

The Lake Tegernsee, Tegernsee

Inside the beer hall

Here is an excellent place for lunch or dinner. The "Ducal Brewpub," the flagship watering hole for the Tegernseer Hofbräu beer brewery, sits in a large building along the lake, a short walk from the center of town. You have the choice of sitting inside the cavernous beer hall, or outside on the terrace during good weather. Since it was indeed good weather, we chose the latter.

Favorite Dish: I tried the Bierbratl (oven fresh pork bellies with a crispy beer coating and beer sauce) with a tasty potato-cucumber salad. Sara thought she'd eat light and try the "Vegetarian Salad" with garlic bread. As it turned out, the salad was enormous and smothered in yummy mushrooms. I did notice she managed to eat it all, though.

Beer? Yes, they have beer. Very good beer. Choose from the ordinary Helles, the "Spezial," or the Dunkel, all served from the barrel. Weissbier fans can content themselves with the tasty Schneider Weissbier. All varieties of beer (except the Schneider) cost EUR 2.85 for a half-liter -- an excellent price for Bavaria. Traditionalists can get a 1-Liter "Mass" (EUR 5.70) on request.

Transportation

Lake Boats

Lake Boats, Tegernsee

travelfrosch Says:  Frequent lake boats allow you to get around the Tegernsee fairly easily. While you can purchase point-to-point tickets, the best value is likely the EUR 13 "grosse rundfahrt" ticket, allowing you to create your own hop-on / hop-off boat tour of the Tegernsee area (you are...

What about BOB? :-)

What about BOB? :-), Tegernsee

travelfrosch Says:  The Bayerische Oberlandbahn, or BOB, is a private train service run by Veolia Transport. Departing approximately hourly, BOB trains originate at the Munich Hauptbahnhof and continue to the Tegernsee, Lenggries, and Bayerischzell. (NOTE: The train splits into three parts --...
