Grafenwöhr

by Leipzig

Grafenwoehr is Europe's largest military training area. You meet chiefly american soldiers here. Also the official currency is the US-Dollar.I served my military service in Bavaria and was also stationed in Grafenwöhr as a weather soldier to supply American artillery with wind data.

Dachau

by Leipzig

Dachau is located 20 kilometers west of Munich at the Amper River. The town was erected on a 480 meter high hill and has today over 35,000 inhabitants. Dachau has more to offer then the former concentration camp. Here you find an old city centre with pretty well-restored houses and a beautiful castle with a breathtaking view over the city and to Munich.

Tip Photo
Augsburg

by Leipzig

The city of Augsburg was founded by the Romans in 15 before Christi. It recieved its name from the Roman Emperor Augustus. The city had its Golden Age in the 15th and 16th century as international trading centre, forced by the Fugger and Welser merchants families. In the centre you can see a lot of beautiful Renaissance buildings that give the city its unique character.

Munich

by richiecdisc

Munich needs no introductions and will surely be on most people'sGermany itineraries. This is for good reason too. It's a big city with all the cultural advantages but still retains a small village feeling, with great open green parks and lots of outdoors eating and drinking opportunities if the weather permits. In close proximity to the Bavarian Alps, it is a city full of sports loving citizens who seize the first opportunity to enjoy their magnificent surroundings.

Tip Photo
Bamberg

by richiecdisc

Though not exactly off the beaten path, Bamberg has thus escaped being overly touristy and remains one of Germany's true gems. Blessed with a plethora of architectual styles, it is a sheer pleasure to wander around its cobblestone streets. It is also home to Rauchbier, a smoky delight once popular throughout this region and now a specialty of only the immediate surroudings.

Munich Kripperlmarkt (Manger Market) V

by flyingscot4

Many of the individual stalls are wonderfully unique. One of the stalls in front of the Frauenkirche is a miniature replication of the famous church. There are many selling figures and shapes made of wood. Still others are made with all kinds of materials including prunes and figs. Christmas oriented ceramic figures are found all over the square in all sizes. Most of the Munich-specific ornaments and decorations are made in the Munich area. This is an excellent Christmas Market.

Munich Kripperlmarkt (Manger Market) IV

by flyingscot4

This tip deals with the city lights decorations. The main tree in front of the Neues Rathaus has over 2500 lights which is a large number but small in comparison the number of lights that light the marketplace and the stores.

Tip Photo
Munich Kripperlmarkt (Manger Market) III

by flyingscot4

Still more of Munich's Kripperlmarkt. As mentioned, one can find almost anything for Christmas from to gifts to food. The stalls are varied although there is duplication among bakeries, bratwurst, and glüwein stalls. There is a huge variety of Christmas "stuff," for lack of a better term. This tip reveals images of decorations and unique stalls.

Tip Photo
Munich Kripperlmarkt (Manger Market) II

by flyingscot4

More of Munich Kripperlmarkt. The feelings are festive in this Christmas Market of over 140 stalls in spite of the weather.Winter in this part of Germany is usually cold and damp with temperatures right around freezing with the accompanying sleet and rain. For Müncheners, that just means a good umbrella (one that doesn't turn inside out in the wind) and another layer of clothing. Bicycles are common year 'round.

Munich Kripperlmarkt (Manger Market) I

by flyingscot4

Of the 85 Christmas Markets in Munich the Kripperlmarkt or Manger Market is the largest and most famous. Its main area is Marienplatz in the center of the old city. In and around the square there are over 140 stalls set up to sell ornaments and other Christmas decorations, bratwurst and other kinds of wurst, Lebkuchen (specialty German gingerbread), Glühwein (hot, spiced wine), kinderpunsch (childrens' punch), candy, nuts, pretzels, pancakes, and other traditional German Christmas foodstuffs. The entire Marienplatz is decorated including the many stores in the area. The store windows are filled with Christmas items for sale and beautifully decorated. The square is filled with warm light coming from the individual stalls and the aromas are wonderful.
