Fuessen has many tourist attractions. The town itself has a nice pedestrian shopping area, with some typical type "tourist trap" souvenir stores ( hey, I like them!) plus many that sell traditional Bavarian clothing, many restaurants, cafes and pubs. A short distance from Fuessen you can visit Schloss Neuschwanstein, or Schloss Hohenschwangau. There is also a castle in Fuessen, but we couldn't figure out how to get to it.
Wieskirche is one of the most famous churches in Bavaria. It's really in the middle of nowhere, but worth the visit. My daugher's comment: "It would be cool if our church in Orlando looked like that" .......:-)
I personally liked Schloss Linderhof better than Neuschwanstein, at least on the inside. It is much less dark and gloomy and has lots of beautiful decorations. The gardens are incredible and the Grotto was amazing. More Wagner scenes in the grotto, but not the rest of the Schloss. The tour was much more enjoyable than the one at Neuschwanstein. Only a few people were there, no tour buses. We had all the time we wanted to look at everything. This is the place King Ludwig actually spent a lot of time living in. I bought a small book about the life of Ludwig and his castles in the souvenir store. It's sad the way his life ended . He did not sound like a happy person but very lonely and strange. But, I think he got murdered
Since we live in Orlando and have seen Cinderella's Castle at Disney many times, I have always wanted to see the "original" Neuschwanstein Castle, so we visited it this summer on a trip to Germany. We only had a few days in Bavaria but that was the highlight of our trip. On the day we visited Neuschwanstein, it rained. It rained a lot, and continuously. We were soaked despite rain jackets and umbrellas by the time we walked up the steep , paved road to the castle entrance, after having arrived at 8 am sharp at the ticket booth. We did not get on a tour until 9.45, despite that. So we went to the very expensive restaurant up near the entrance to the castle and had hot tea and coffee. When we got to the entrance about a million Japanese tourists with umbrellas were in front of us. Finally, we figured out that we had to shove our way through the crowds to get to our tour. Rödental is a small village outside Coburg and there you can see a very nice small castle tied to the German and English history: in 1819 borned the prince Albert consort of Queen Victoria that frequently sojourned there. Oberammergau is a small town located just few Km far from Ettal. This town is very famous for its wonderful houses painting in the Luftlmalerei style (the most beautiful is the Pilatushaus). The beautiful Lindau is the only Bavarian town on the Lake Constance.The town was settled by Romans and it has got a nice Medieval heart located on a island with some fantastic churches like Musnster or Stephanskirche. The nice town of Mittenwald is located in the Valley of the River Isar in the Alps, on the route that connects Munich with Innsbruck. Ottobeuren is a wonderful abbey, one of the best of whole Germany. The interior is fantastic and it was created by the best artisans of that time is a mix of Rococò and Baroque style.
