Ettal

by Cristian_Uluru

Ettal's Abbey is located just 5 Km north of Oberammergau is the middle of the Alps. The abbey is fantastic. It was built in 1330 and rebuilt in Baroque style in the 18th century. Inside the abbey all the walls are covered with plasters, angels, statues and decorations made by Swiss-Italian architect Enrico Zuccalli.More information on my Ettal page.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

by Cristian_Uluru

The nice town of Garmish-Partenkirchen has got wonderful landscape and it is a perfect place to whom like winter sports (to ski in primis). From the town you can reach the Zugspitze by train. The town has got a very nice church: Alte Kirche St.Martin.More information on my Garmisch-Partenkirchen page

Ramsau, a tiny village south of Berchtesgaden

by wadekorzan

The church in the photo may very well be one of the most photographed churches in all of Germany. It's not because the church itself is so unusual, but because the setting is simply outstandingly beautiful. The village is located just south of Berchtesgaden, and it is worth coming here for a couple of hours just to wander around. There is a beautiful glacial stream coming down from the mountains and over that stream are several small wooden pedestrian bridges, and I recommend to cross over each and every one of them to enjoy the changing views. They say "a picture is worth more than a thousand words" so there's not much sense in writing here too much more, just have a look at the picture. Last thing: there is a great web page on Ramsau, just click here

Berchtesgaden is a must see!

by wadekorzan

Berchtesgaden is a must see, and is not just a highlight of Bavaria, but a highlight of Germany and Europe! Located in the very southeast of Bavaria, surrounded by the Bavarian Alps and very close to Salzburg, Austria, you'll surely not be disappointed with your visit here. As with most places, you could always see and do more...and there is never enough time. If you're on a tight schedule and only have one day, then certainly you should still go! My recommendation would be as follows:One day:Visit the Koenigsee (King's Lake), the Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) and see the church in Ramsau (village 7 km south of Berchtesgaden)Two days:Visit the center of the village plus visit the salt mines in nearby Bad ReichenhallThree or more days: Lots more can be done, especially in the form of easy to more difficult hiking, rowing, rafting, nature, shopping, etc. Some additional notes:1. When you go...

Aschaffenburg

by Leipzig

Aschaffenburg is an unknown gem on the foot of the Spessart. Its history dates back to over one thousand years. It was originally a settlement of the Alamanni, even Roman legions also had their station here. The town offers fascinating buildings like the over one millenium old Stiftskirche, the mightly Johannisburg Castle and the Schönborner Hof.

Neuschwanstein Castle/Hoechwangu Castle

by Ladymarian1

Whatever you do book these castles via the web. We went on a Sunday at the end of April and arrived at 10 am. It was simply packed and had we not had pre-booked tickets we would never have got in. You are given a timed ticket. Do not be tempted to think that you don't need the 2 hours interval between the 2 castles - you do. Forget taking the pony and trap up to Neuschwantein you will wait for ever more - take the shuttle bus up. You are herded around these castles which were expensive at Euros 20 per person plus car parking and fees for shuttle bus. The climb to Neuschwanstein is steep. Linderhof near Ettal is far more pretty and picturesque where you are given time to go round. It is also far better value for money. Unfortunately you can't book tickets on line, but it is not so crowded. For those driving the sign is marked Linderhof Schloss.

Fairytale Castle

by Bauchou

This is a picturesque place, and shouldn't be missed. The Neuschwanstein castle is amazing, and the inside is more ornate that I would have thought. The tour takes you through three of about eight levels, the rest not having been completed yet. The Castle was built by the prideful King Ludwig, who was killed before he could complete this dream castle.

Neuschwanstein Castle

by MonicaLouise

This castle is a must-see and is a huge tourist destination for visitors to Bavaria. In summer over 6000 people tour the castle per day. Because of this it is highly advised to purchase your tickets on-line prior to arrival. You will still have to wait in a queue at the ticket office in the village of Hohenschwangau but it is not as long as the one for those without tickets. The 9 euro admission price is quite reasonable but there are other hidden costs - parking for one and transport to the castle from the parking area for another. It's a 30-40 minute uphill walk at no cost if you have the time and/or stamina - otherwise you have a choice of horse drawn carriage or bus to get up the hill to the castle. The rates for these two methods of transport aren't too bad and the cost is even less for the downhill transport back. Once you arrive at the gates to the castle you must stand in line...

Füssen / Fuessen

by globetrott

Fuessen is a small town on the south-border of Bavaria.Mainly the tourists go there in order to see the famous castles of "mad" King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who rather invested his (and Bavaria's) money into great and pittoresque castles instead of weapons...Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are just 6 Km off Fuessen.Füssen is also well known for its great castle - seen on my pic - the monastery of Mang and lots of lovely baroque houses in the old town of Fuessen -reade more about it on my Fuessen-page !

Tip Photo
Ettal

by globetrott

Ettal is a small village in the very south of Bavaria, close to Garmisch Partenkirchen and Oberammergau. In 1330 the monastery was founded and rebuilt in baroque style during the 17th century.Do not miss the great interior, with excellent paintings on the ceiling and the walls, and a lot of golden ornaments, that make this church really special. There is a big parking right in front of the monastery that may be visited freely any time during the day. There are more infos and pics about it on my Ettal-page !
