The town Hof - Oberfranken

by elgin99

Hof is in Bavaria very above - and also on the height: The charming city lies 495 meters over the sea in an attractive environment between franc forest and Fichtelgebirge in the middle of the loveliest nature, that guarantees quiet and therewith a disengaging of the stress at the job. Restored sights e.g. that Theresienstein building in the lovely city park, the Freiheitshalle (freedom hall) or the Untreusee (lake). A real experience have been since 1967 the annual "International Film Day" with which the most famous directors give themselves a date. It´s curious. So many years I lived close to that town. It was directly beside my former hometown and my shopping and cultural center. But seldom I shot a picture. It was normal to be there. I have to search for some, please have patience. But on that website of Hof you have really a special: please click on the air picture, wherever you want....

Seehof Palace

by elgin99

That beautiful palace was built in 1686 as summer residence of Bamberg Prince-Bishops. Most of the Palace today used by Bavarian State Conservation Office. Worth to have a sight for the Palace, the Orangerie and exciting water fountains in the Rococo Garden, an area of 21 ha also with lakes. Really beautiful! You should have a look for opening hours and times of water games before you travel thereto. All seen on website, also in English.

Bayrischer Wald, Arber and Zwiesel

by elgin99

Bordering to Czechia there is this very beautiful, wild romantic holiday region. The nature preserve Bayerischer Wald (24.000 ha) and the oldest national park of Germany is geologically one of the oldest mountains of Germany. Its highest mountains are the Big Arber (1456 m), Rachel (1453 m) and Lusen (1373 m). Above all the Arber is known, not only as a traveling purpose, but also as a good ski area. At his feet the fascinating Arber lake. The National Park has wide animal area. (see the tip)Zwiesel is a beautiful little town in that region. Often I made a vacation there. Zwiesel is the town of glass production and glass art. The town church is also worth to see!Whole region is famous for its gaffer!

National Park of Bavarian Wood

by elgin99

It was the first National Park in Germany, founded 1970 and got an international reputation. On 24,000 ha are living many wildlife animals, also wood grouse, wolfes and lynxes. The last often gets stars of a lot of movies. One need more than a whole day to walk and detect that wide and fascinating natural area, or the animal enclosures.

Touring the salt mines

by monorailgold

I love taking the tour of the salt mines while in Berchtesgaden. It is very interesting learning how the salt is extracted from the mountain. This is a very informative, yet fun, tour. The first thing you do is put on mining gear. Then you board this "train". The thing is with this train, you sit on it like a horse, only, the next person sits right up behind you, then the next person, right up behind him. This train takes you down into the mine. You get off and follow a tour guide through the various rooms throughout the mine. You visit a chapel, a movie theatre and slide down 2 wooden slides. They are loads of fun. At the end of the tour you cross this huge underground lake. The water is very clear and at the other side they have a fountain that you can actually taste how salty it is. The whole tour takes over an hour. It was very well done and even though the tour guide spoke in...

Linderhof Castle

by monorailgold

Linderhof Castle is a beautiful, small castle set in the mountains of Bavaria. Linderhof is located about halfway between Schwangau and Ettal (Close to Oberammergau). It is about an hour drive from Schwangau to Linderhof along a beautiful two lane road. Take A95 and B2 to Oberau. Follow the signs in Oberau and take B23(Ettaler Strasse) to Ettal. After Ettal turn left on the road ST2060. Turn right in Linderhof to reach the castle. By train (deutsche bahn) to oberammergau, catch the bus connection to Linderhof from Oberammergau (9622). If you drive, you must park in a lot a few minutes walk from the visitors center. The walk is very nice, through the meadow with the mountains all around. There is a nice, large walkway to the visitors center. You must buy your tickets there. They also have a gift shop with some nice things. You can walk up to the castle and look around and take pictures...

Landscape gardening Eremitage

Created 1715, Rokoko, two palaces and nice trick fountains in historical area every full hour till 17th o´clock. (Not in late autumn or during winter time.)During summer there are performances in an old ruin. You can walk across for many hours, or have a rest in a good restaurant and another café.The old trees are fascinating, also you will be exciting about the hedges and flowers. The New Palace (Orangerie) is complete covered with many thousand of coloured glass stones. Fascinating in sunshine! Some more pictures are in my travelogue.Visit also the Old Palace (at time its under reconstruction), therein a funny fountain grotto. :))

cable car ride!!!

by monorailgold

A trip to Berchtesgaden would not be complete without a ride on the Jenner Cable Car or Jennerbahn. This is a wonderful way to get to the top of Jenner mountain with its fabulous views of Lake Konigsee and the surounding areas. It is one of the best views in Germany. You can take the cable car all the way to the top and back down again or you can get off halfway and hike the rest of the way. There is a restaurant/gift shop at the top station where you can get a meal or a beer. Drinking a beer outside with snow on the ground, looking at the surrounding mountains and lakes, watching the tourists is my idea of heaven. It just doesn't get any better. For an even better view of the lake, continue down the path to the overlook. It is quite a hike, if you are not is shape, but take your time and you will be paid off in spades. The ride on the cable car itself takes about half an hour. The...
