Bavaria Tourist Traps

  • Glockenspiel at the New Town Hall

    Munich Tourist Traps

Glockenspiel has it's own tower that now takes you by elevator to the top. Wonderful view but nothing compared with the view from St. Peter's tower of the Glockenspiel Clock in action. A magnificent view with a walk of the vertical rather than horizontal kind, up the 306 or so steps of St Peter’s Church tower just by Marienplatz. Well worth the...

  • Oktoberfest

    Munich Tourist Traps

Most tents at the Oktoberfest are already closed early in the morning, because they are simply overcrowded. No chance getting in without a reservation... Last year, my friends and I decided to follow the advice of a local friend and tried an alternative: "Das Wiesnzelt am Stiglmaierplatz". Though it is not directly located at the Oktoberfest, it's...

  • Hofbräuhaus

    Munich Tourist Traps

Oh my.... the world famous Hofbräuhaus.... For me it is one of Germany’s biggest tourist traps, no matter if, according to Wikipedia, “it generates a two digit million Euro turnover per year”. The reason why I classify it as such is simple: it seems that 98% of foreign visitors want to go there, maybe just to report “I’ve been there” when they get...

  • Marienplatz

    Munich Tourist Traps

It isn't much of a "tourist trap" per-say BUT there are a lot of tourists that gather here. Keep the equation in mind: lots of tourists=pick pockets delight Be sure to keep an eye or hand on your valuables. I've never had anything happen to me in the Marienplatz but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen.

  • Lederhosenparties, Hofbräuhaus and .....

When I read and hear that many foreign travellers come to Bavaria and think “Oktoberfest – Lederhosen – beer parties – Hofbräuhaus” it makes me really sad and angry about the one or ones who have created this image. Especially when I see foreigners wearing Lederhosen and Dirndl, the Bavarian national costumes. How would other nations feel if...

  • Oktoberfest

Don't get me wrong, I like festivals but the Munich Oktoberfest is a way too big. Millions of tipsy people overcrowd the fairground. Prices are very high and you hardly get in one of the beer tents. I prefer smaller festivals. Munich offers a lot more! Why not to have a beer in the English Garden or in one of the cozy cafés and pubs?

  • If you have to go, but really, you don't...

Neuschwanstein is perhaps the single most visited attraction in Germany and that alone should keep you from going. Disney is probably responsible as he stole the image for his fairy tale castle. But it's over crowded and the tour is expensive and poorly done. If you have to go, just enjoy the castle from one of the trails that circle it. The...
