Weiden Things to Do

  • WALK THE WANDERWEG GOLDENE STRASSE

The Goldene Strasse that I walked along, was once a very important medieval trade route between Nuremberg and Prague. The origin of the name goes back to Charles IV day's. In the 14th century, this route brought much prosperity to the Town's along the route. From Bohemia came skins, wax , spices, copper , tin , iron , herring, suet , ham, salt, and...

  • SCULPTURE'S & MEMORIAL'S

Like the Fountain's, there are many sculpture's and memorial's in Weiden. Once again, I found a very unusual one, known as "The Tree's of Life," built as a reminder of planting the avenue of tree's in 1714 and the donation to the city in 1819. Photo 2 is the old cemetery light I passed by when seeing St. Michael's Church. The light is believed to...

  • FOUNTAIN'S IN WEIDEN

I thought I would put all the Fountain's under this one tip, as there are many, and I don't know a lot about them.My first, I found in the Lower Market and it was VERY unusual. Named the "Gunter wall man," it was built between 1985-1986 out of granite and bronze. The Fountain gives an insight into the city's history and traditions in the Upper...

  • ST. JOSEPH'S CHURCH

Even though the town of Weiden is old, the Catholic Church of St. Joseph's is reasonably young. The Church took 18 months to build between 1900/01, and was the largest church of the diocese of Regensburg since the Middle Ages. The interior was designed in Art Nouveau form, the outside of the building is neo-Romanesque style.I read, the Art Nouveau...

  • WALK BESIDE THE OLD CITY WALL'S

This was a really nice walk I found in Weiden. A pathway from a main road led past the southwest corner of the old city wall which included the main wall, moat wall, corner bastion and tower shell. Beside the pathway was the creek ,Kurt-Schumacher-Allee, a pretty little stream running merryily alongside the walls. It was April, and Crocus bulbs had...

  • THE UPPER & LOWER GATE'S

To enter the Market Place, you may pass through either the Upper Gate/Oberes Tor or the Lower Gate. The Upper Gate was demolished in 1911 to allow the road to be widened. When the Gate was rebuilt, the two round tower's on the original Tower were omitted, so this Tower is plainer and has a double hipped roof. Beside the Gate is a Fortress house...

  • ST. MICHAEL'S CHURCH

St. Michael's Church today, is a lovely Baroque Church. It hasn't always been baroque, back in time before 1448, this was a Gothic church situated in the middle of a cemetery. It sounds like fire may have damaged the Church around 1536 - 1540. I was able to go inside and see the beautiful Pulpit from 1787 that shows the Archangel Michael on the...

  • THE OLD TOWN HALL

Located in what I think is the middle of the Town Square, is the OLD TOWN HALL. The city now has a "new' Town Hall. The old Town Hall was built between 1539-1545. In the early 1900's it was rebuilt. In the Middle Ages, shops were located on the ground floor, so in 1981, the shops were put back there again. The old Town Hall was quite an important...

  • THE MARKET PLACE

I came across the large area which was the Market Place, after passing through one of the town Gates. The "upper market" has lots of beautiful gabled houses from around 1540, most are painted in bright colours. This area is between the Upper Gate and the Old City Hall. The area known as the "Lower Market", which is where four major fairs have been...

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Looking for somewhere to post letters in Weiden, well, don't look for a red postbox, instead a lovely old bright blue one that I found in the market place.
It looked like an art nouveau post box as there were a couple of golden ladies, horse's head's and a woman's face. I hope they never get rid of this piece history for it is really a work of art!
