If you happen to be anywhere near the tourist trap area around Neuschwanstein, drive a little more and visit the "must see" Wieskirche. The church is situated in a pasture in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. It is very nice to see a beautifull building that is not being crowded by other buildings. All you see is the church and nature. Kudos to the UN for making this a World Heritage Site.

Always explore the area around the tourist site. It is usually equally interesting. Around Wieskirche are meadows and walking paths. As you look up, the Alps are in the background. It is truly spectacular. The meadows were full of wildflowers and the trees were in bloom in May.
This is such a beautiful area. Don't miss the castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau and the villages of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald and in Austria Seefeld and Innsbruck . . . all an easy drive.

For pics inside the church, you will mostly need NO flash, as big windows make sure, it is rather light inside.
A very good Wide-angle-lens will be necessary to be able to take pics of the whole ceiling or sidewalls.
35mm is mostly not enough.

The organ is another masterpiece of the church.
Have a look for the great way that the light is used in order to point out certain parts of the architecture.
Wieskirche is also a monument on the UNESCO-list of World Heritage since 1983.

Have a closer look for the great details of the pulpit, on the left of the church.
Many of these sculptures are religious symbols, and so it is a pity, I did not get there, when a guided tour was available.
I will certainly return one day...

This is the ceiling in front of the church, close to the altar.
You might easily oversee it, as it is not possible to enter that part of the forward church, but you have to bend out of one of the windows and take the pic.

The church consists of 2 main parts :
a smaller part around the altar and a much bigger, round part at the entrance.
On both sides of the altar you will see arcades, where you may attend the church service through niches and windows.
On my pic you see that part of the church.

The church is open daily from 08.00 a.m. till 07.00 p.m.
There is no admission fee, but a donation is expected for the renovation of the church, and you may decide upon the amount by yourself, and put it into a large box at the entrance.

Knocking on heavens door - or rather " The judgement day " is the title of the biggest painting on the ceiling of the church.
This painting is one of the many great works of art - the throne of the judge ist still empty and heaven's gate is still closed
