If you happen to be anywhere near the tourist trap area around Neuschwanstein, drive a little more and visit the "must see" Wieskirche. The church is situated in a pasture in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. It is very nice to see a beautifull building that is not being crowded by other buildings. All you see is the church and nature. Kudos to the UN for making this a World Heritage Site.

Always explore the area around the tourist site. It is usually equally interesting. Around Wieskirche are meadows and walking paths. As you look up, the Alps are in the background. It is truly spectacular. The meadows were full of wildflowers and the trees were in bloom in May.
This is such a beautiful area. Don't miss the castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau and the villages of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald and in Austria Seefeld and Innsbruck . . . all an easy drive.

One of the loveliest churches in Europe is the "Wies Church". When standing in front of the church the visitor will find it hard to anticipate the splendour of the interior of the nave executed in the exuberant rococo style. The Wies Church was one of the first monuments to have been adopted by Unesco as an object of cultural and natural heritage worthy of being protected and preserved

After seeing the church, take a walk down the path that runs along the side of the church.
There are a few farms in the area and we found the people that we meet along the trail to be very friendly.

a.k.a. „Zum Gegeißelten Heiland auf der Wies“
This very famous pilgrimage church in Rokoko style by Dominikus Zimmermann was constructed between 1746 and 1754. It is still located in the meadow between grazing cows.
The rich decorated blind vault is made of wood, which made possible these high windows.

You can take a bus from any of the main towns or you can drive your car here.
If you do drive there is a very big parking lot that was full when we arrived there.
There were many locals that rode their bikes here from some of the local towns.

There was a trail along the side of the church for walking which went along some farms.
