Bocksbeutel, the Typical Franconian Wine Bottles
The Bocksbeutel is the typical bottle that is used for Franconian wines. In Germany only Franconia uses it, plus Badisch Franconia (= the Tauber valley, the part of Baden-Württemberg adjacent to Franconia, and four villages on the southern edge of Baden-Baden that have the right to use it.
Such bottles are also common in Portugal. In Greece and Italy they used for a few wines.
The bottle has a short neck and a big flattened belly, similar to the shape of a field bottle or canteen. They have been in use in Franconia since the early 18th century. A wine has to meet certain quality criteria to obtain the permission for being bottled in Bocksbeutel.
About the origins of the name there are various interpretations. The most popular one derives the name from the scrotum of the male goat or ram ("Bock"). A "Beutel" is a bag. (The other explanations are boring, so I won't bother you with them.)
The first two photos show historical Bocksbeutel. I took these photos in Mainfränkisches Museum where they are on display. The third photo has a modern example, the contents of which I am enjoying while I am writing this tip.
When pouring wine from a Bocksbeutel, hold the bottle in horizontal position as shown in photo 4. The hand grabs the bottom of the bottle.
Zum Wohl! (To your well-being - a common toast among wine connoisseurs.)

This is a painting of Balthasar Neumann. Remember? He built the Residenz and so many more of Würzburg´s baroque buildings. He is pretty well-known, and most Germans daily hold his picture in their hands......
I have been talking so much...
I have been talking so much about it - here it is, Franconian wine in the typical bottle, the 'Bocksbeutel'. It comes in other bottles, too - but only Franconian wine may come in vessels like this one. Unique!

As mentioned above, I actually...
As mentioned above, I actually stayed in Bad Kissingen and there you can visit the ruin of the 'fort' Botenlaube. It got his name from a Count Bodo who was mentioned for the first time in 1004.
This is the local beer here. There are better then this around Bavaria of course, but still, when I visit a place I try to taste the local brands
