Bürgerspital or Juliusspital: You'll end up in hospital
"You visited Würzburg? How was it?" - "Ooouuuh, we spent the evening in hospital..."
A notorious joke in our family, whenever any of us goes to Würzburg.
"Hospital" implies either Bürgerspital or Juliusspital.
There are two old hospital foundations in the city that date back to the 14th (Bürgerspital) respective 16th century (Juliusspital). In those times the purpose of a hospital extended beyond care for the sick and injured, it also involved care for orphans, invalid soldiers, poor old people. These institutions received lots of donations, not only money but also real estate, and among the latter, vineyards in the best locations.
Both are still hospitals, but both also have a winery and operate a restaurant and wine bar and wine shop on their premises. Both belong to the best addresses in town for local food and tasting the local wines in cosy surroundings.
You cannot go wrong with either - pick the one from where your accommodation is easier to reach;-)
The photo was taken in Bürgerspital, by the way. My hotel was just round the corner.

AKW ( autonomes kulturzentrum wuerzburg): AKW - meeting point of the "alternative szene"
Locared on the compound of a former brewery, the AKW is a bit the melting pot for the alternative szene in wuerzburg. You can find the local "weekend-punks" sitting beside the buissnessstudents, and the 68 generation looking at it, getting sentimental about the good old times.
They try to invite some interessting acts from time to time, and there isd an outside cinema in summer. also in summertime they open a nice beergarden, so in summer you can meet people there and chill out later inside the place. prices are a bit cheaper than elsewhere.
On thursday, the entrance is free.
Dress Code: depends a bit on the style of music played, but in general you can dress what ever you like.

NA: Wurzburg bar on Sunday
Drinking in Wurzburg on a Sunday night doesn't last long being that most things are closed by 1am. Little early for a night scene to ever develop. With a lot of colleges I was quite suprised to see so little nightime antics. Yuki and I loaded our spongy livers with the FrankenWein, turned that mother out and headed lightheaded into the desolate streets. The streets were still, wheel rumbles on far-off highways covered the distant backdrop with deathly silence closer. Lights highlighted signs and cast fading stretched ovals of light that climbed up walls from the half circle still on the sidewalk. The only grumbling beyond distant motors was the concotion I made within. The boiling over perculated to my brain and released an animal defunct of inhabitions.

Loma: my favourite bar
the Loma is a good cocktail bar, there are a lot of young people (students) in it. the atmosphere is great and there are often some specials in it. like carneval partys, summer party and the most is going on when there is a football champion chip.
And the Loma is in a street, where a lot of other bars and pubs are, so if you don´t like it you only have to walk along the street
