Alte Universität (Old University) by Nemorino The University in Würzburg was founded in 1575 by Julius Echter, who was the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg from 1573 to 1617. At first the university had only two faculties, namely theology and philosophy. Then in 1587 the first professor of law was hired, and in 1589 the first professor of medicine. Echter intended this to be very much a Catholic university. Students were required to attend services at the university church. They were not allowed to go to pubs, discuss theological questions at mealtimes or borrow large amounts of money. The Faculty of Law is still located in this "Old University" building, Domschulstraße 16, which was built in 1582. Leave a Comment

St. Johannis Church by Nemorino This neogothic Lutheran church is located at Hofstallstraße 5, across the street from the Music University. The church was first built from 1892 to 1895. After wartime destruction it was rebuilt in 1956/57, reusing parts of the steeple. You can recognize it from a distance, for instance from up on the Marienberg Fortress, because of its distinctive pencil-shaped twin towers. Leave a Comment

Hochschule für Musik by Nemorino The Music University (Hochschule für Musik) was founded in 1797 as the Collegium musicum academicum. It changed its name several times, and was given the status of a university in 1973. At present they have 80 full-time and 140 part-time teachers in six departments covering all aspects of musical theory and practice. Students and professors often give concerts which are open to the public. Admission to these concerts is often free, and never more than 10 euros. Click on the link below for their current program. Inside St. Johannis Church by Nemorino Another distinctive feature of this church is the Sculpture of "The Coming of the Lord", by Helmut Amman, which is suspended from the ceiling above the altar. This church is the home of the Würzburg Bach Choir, which performs here regularly, for instance during the annual "Bach Days" in November. Leave a Comment

Conti - Hof is just a bit outside the main tourists-streams but it looks interesting with its great facade in white with red bricks and that ornate small extra-tower, that shows some interesting sculptures and great decorations - see also my other photographs ! This house got its name by the noble family "von Contus" and it was built in 1600 by Domherr Julius Ludwig Echter von Mespelbrunn (Mespelbrunn is a beautiful watercastle, I also made a page about it) . Since the year 1817 this building is the seat of the Bishop of Wuerzburg. You may see this great building just from outside, bt I think it is worth to take a closer look ! Leave a Comment

Lusamgaertchen is the name of some remains of a cloister dating back to the year 1180 and there you will find the tomb of Walther von der Vogelweide, a well-known singer of medieval times, who used to travel from one royal palace to the other and sing for the royalties of that time. Some of the old arches still show ornate decorations and sculptured reliefs, it would be a pity to miss it ! The entrance to Lusamgaertchen is from Martinstrasse next to the Neumuenster. No entrance-fee and no restrictions, just go there and enjoy ! Leave a Comment

Kreuzgang St.Kilian / the cloisters of St.Kilian by globetrott, 4 more photos The Kreuzgang of the St.Kilian-Dom is worth seeing as well - you can enter it through one of the doors inside the church and then you can take a walk along beautifully decorated tomb-stones, mainly of the baroque times. It was an honor to be burried there so close to the church, in many cases this priviledge was given to noble people who were able to give high donations to the monastery... No entrance-fee or other restrictions : you may enter and walk around as long as the church is open ! Leave a Comment

Kaepple / the pilgrim-church at Nikolausberg by globetrott, 1 more photos Käppele is the local name for the lovely pilgrim-church close to the castle Marienberg. It was also built after the plans of Balthasar Neumann between 1748 and 1752. Already in 1650 there was a small chapel at this place and several miracles happened in that small chapel, so it became a popular pilgrim-chapel for the people of that area. The traditional way to the "kaepple" is by foot along a pilgrim-path with 14 stations with life-size sculptures. In case that you dont have enough time to step up, take your car or take a look from Marienberg, as I did ! Leave a Comment
