The beautigul Kappelle is located on Nikolausberg, on the right side of Marienberg and in front of the Main river. The Kappelle is a rococo sanctuary built by Balthasar Neumann in 1752 and it has got three domes. The interior of the church is full of wonderful plasters made by Johann Michael Feichtmayr and frescos made by Matthaus Gunther in 1752. The church is reached with a stairway with 14 chapels showing the Via Crucis with statues realized by Peter Wagner among 1767 and 1775.

The Fortress Marienberg is the castle on a hill across the Old Main Bridge, overlooking the whole town area as well as the surrounding hills. Würzburg's Old Main Bridge was built 1473–1543 to replace the destroyed Romanesque bridge. It was adorned with well-known statues of saints about 1730. Superficially, the Old Main Bridge and the Fortress in the background reminded me of the Charles Bridge and the Prague Castle.

Tilman Riemenschneider was one of the best known artists of the area, especially for his fine woodcarvings and some of his best works are to be seen in Wuerzburg (a giant wooden altar by him I saw in Rothenburg o.d.Tauber)
This group of 3 sculptures is standing in the centre-part of Neumuenster, it is holy Kilian in the centre togeather with Kolonat and Totnan.
There are some more works by Riemenschneider in Neumuenster:
a gothic cruzifix dating back to 1350
a madonna made of sandstone

Erzbischoefliche Residenz looks great from the front-side, where you enter Hofkirche and the museums or the large entrance-hall with the giant fresco by Tiepolo, but in my personal opinion this palace looks even better from the backside, the garden-side. Lots of great sandstone-sculptures, finely-cut trees and bushes form an excellent recreation-area and from most places you will have a great view of the palace as well.

Fuerstengarten is the name of this great terrace-garden in front of Marienberg castle. You can enter it only through one of the side-gates inside of the castle and enjoy the great view of the city.
Right below - but outside of the castle-grounds - you will see nice vinyards, where the famous wine of the region comes from.
Fuerstengarten is open Monday till 03.30p.m.
and from Tuesday till Sunday till 05.30

The townhall of Wuerzburg consists of various old buildings, the oldest of them dating back to 1256. Grafeneckart is the name of the building with the tower and the city of Wuerzburg bought it in 1316 as a symbol of their independance from the prince-bishop.
Wenzelsaal is the ornate hall in Grafeneckart, that was used by the mayor but I am not sure wether tourists are able to see it or not.
In any case you can enter the Ratskeller, a really nice restaurant in the basement of the towhall with plenty of great frescos and a few side-halls that are decorated each in a different style (see some more pics of it in my restauarnt-tips !)

Brunnenhaus is the small house that covered the public well of Marienberg castle. Of course such a giant castle and fortification was not able to survive without a sufficient supply of fresh water and in contrary to other such wells it was also beautifully decorated with nice sculptures and decorations.
You can enter the Brunnenhaus without restrictions and free of charge as long as the castle-grounds are open, ONLY when the guided tour through Marienberg castle goes there for a few minutes, all of the other tourists have to stay out for a few minutes !

Tiepolo & the Residenz are without doubt the most important sights of Wuerzburg. The Residenz, the ornate palace of the prince-bishop, is a UNESCO-World heritage, built between 1720 and 1744 by Balthasar Neumann, he was still a young architect at that time. The highlight of the residenz is at the beginning of its guided tour : the large entrancehall, spanning freely and showing the famous fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo from Venice, it is considdered the largest fresco in the world.
unfortunately it is not allowed to take photographs from the upper hall and during the guided tour through the palace, but at least you can take pics from the lower hall, where the tourists gather for the guided tour. There is also that side-hall that is shown on my 2nd-5th photographs !
You can see the Residenz by guided tours only !
Daily April-October : 09.00a.m. - 08.00p.m.
November-March : from 10.00a.m. - 04.30p.m.
last entry 30 min. before they close !
Tours in english at 11.00a.m. and 03.00p.m.
entrancefee is 5 euros, tour takes 45 minutes

Marienkirche was built on top of the hill already a long time before the castle Marienberg was built around of it. Nowadays you can see this interesting church in the centre of the innercourt of that castle and can enter it freely during the day. It is interesting to see these great tombs on the floor and the lovely decorations around of the entrance-gate of Marienkirche.
