Bärenhaus im Schnoor: Bears bears everywhere

Brenhaus im Schnoor

We wandered into this delightful little world of bears and bear ephemera, purely by accident and found ourselves totally engrossed and enchanted by it! Everything you could possibly imagine you could buy for a bear is in here - every type of outfit from a tutu to Lederhosen! It was amazing - and I don't even particularly like stuffed bears - but these came in all shapes and sizes and were sweet and it was hard to resist buying one because I know where this kind of hobby can lead - to obsessions-ville!!!

My friends mother already lives there and she bought her a little Strandkorper (a typical German beach-basket chair - bear sized of course) and some little clothes - including echt Leder (real leather) Lederhosen (soooo sweet!) and a little felt Austrian hat, as well as a few other bits and pieces.... but was surprised at the price... 61E!

It was great fun looking round though - we were in there for hours! A real Aladdins cave of bears! :))

What to buy: Absolutely anything you need for your bear!

Sögestrasse: The other shopping street

Sgestrasse

The Sögestrasse is the obvious street going from the Marktplatz to the train station.

It still has some of the traditional shops of Bremen (like a hidden konditorei).

The pig statues at the end of the street are a public attraction.

Small souvenirs

Lots of souvenir items, tiny, small and big are available in the stalls at the fair of Ischa Freimarkt. I came across, small souvenir bottles of Beck's beer, the stadtmusicians, statue of Roland and even soft toys of the Stadtmusicians. For myself, I got a tiny little flag of Bremen from a shop at the main station.

While walking across the Schnoor area, I noticed a lot of small shops selling souvenirs, gift items, jewelleries and even warm woollens. A view from outside seemed really interesting although I did not prefer to go inside for lack of time.

Everywhere: Souvenirs

1) Souvenirs of the Bremer Stadtmusikanten are the same everywhere – what you see around the Dom is pretty much what’s available. 2) I don’t think there’s a really well-done mini statue available anywhere, but there are a lot of truly bad ones. 3) The same item costs the same everywhere; maybe marginally less in the Marktplatz. (Even if you buy something, get your picture taken with the real thing, and be sure to touch the donkey’s foot for luck.)

Beyond the statue:
· there’s a larger store at the northeastern end of the Böttcherstrasse that has some good reproductions of old etchings and modern drawings of Bremen and the local sights (they aren’t cheap)
· there are a couple of places that sell small bottles of some of the wines available in the Ratskeller (supposed to be a great collection)
· Hachez chocolates are divine (the store is located just northwest of the Marktplatz on the main road leading in)
· there’s a small shop at the Dom end of Schnoor that specializes in souvenirs of the seagoing merchant history of Bremen and Bremerhaven with models of ships in and out of bottles, of all sizes and quality of construction

Wine-shopping

Bremen's Rathaus has one of Germany's best wine cellars and you can buy these wines from the shop at the rear of the Rathaus. It's the type of ship where you know you'll probably have to buy something just for looking and it's probably more expensive than the local supermarkets. Nevertheless, a great place for buying presents.

Karstadt Department Store

Karstadt is the biggest department store at Bremen.
As far as I can recall it's there next to the market.

It has a great buffet restaurant.
The Musik Laden CD store in the basement is fabulous.

What to buy: Whatever you want; it's all there.

Hot Shot Records entrance

At first this was a dull shop. Beware, when you enter at streetlevel, you only will encounter uninteresting material in a small space.

DO GO UP to the first floor and you will be busy for the next 2 hours.

It's impossible to leave without a purchase.

What to buy: Records

What to pay: From Euro 1.00 for a second hand record to normal prices for the latest CD's.
