This architectural jewel with it's rich renaissance front hosts the Bremen city hall. The city is applying for recognition of this building as a UNESCO world heritage site. It can be visited, but only with a guide because the building is still used as office of the cities administration. This statue on the market place is called 'Roland'. It is the main landmark of Bremen and symbolizes the liberty of the Bremen citizens. People believe that the liberty of Bremen will be in danger if Roland will be destroyed. Therefore they take care of him and even put him into a safety box during World War II. Built in the year 1404 this guy is celebrating his 600th birthday this year. Looks pretty handsome for this age. Leave a Comment Directions: On marketplace - opposite of city hall

This street is a work of art. It represents the typical brick architecture of the northern states of Germany and hosts museums, art galleries, shops and restaurants. Halfway down the street you'll find a small square. Three times a day (noon, 3 pm and 6 pm) you can listen there to a carillon. At the same time you can see the portraits of famous men who crossed the Atlantik ocean (i.e. Columbus and Lindbergh) on a rotating panel on the wall. Leave a Comment Directions: South from marketplace on the left side of the "Schuetting"

Wondeful old buildings telling you stories about the rich history as trading port etc. surround our market place. The highlight is the city hall (Rathaus) with its wonderful "Weser Renaissance" style. If you get a chance to get inside (often there is exhibitions or ask if it can be visited at the tourist offices) - do it. It is absolutely beautiful from the inside as well. The whole place is a nice location to watch people. Buy a Bratwurst at "Stockingher" which is right besides the city hall and sit down in the arcades and watch people watch you (they hardly will - you have a Bratwurst in your hand and nobody can tell you're tourist....) The donkey, the dog, the cat and the rooster are from a fairy tale of the Grimm brothers. These animals were old and their owners therefore planned to kill them, because they caused costs for food and could no longer do the jobs they were supposed to do. Knowing their fate the animals went away and when they met each other on the road they decided to go to Bremen and earn their living as singers. Leave a Comment Directions: You find the monument of the Bremen town musicians on the western side of the city hall.

Buergerpark is for Bremen what central park is for New Yorkers. A large green area where the citizens relax. At weekends there are jazz concerts at the "Waldbuehne" - a restaurant with a stage near the northern end of the park. Leave a Comment Directions: Take the northern exit of the main train station an walk northward about 400 m. To Waldbuehne it's too far for walking. You can go by bus. Ask at the information desk at the train station.

Germanies best science entertainment center. The Universum in the shape of a whale head is not only from the outside spectacular. Take at least half a day for the inside, too. It is packed with interactive and immersive elements that let you understand various aspects of science in a fun way. Your kids will love it, and you will, too, if you could at least save a little bit of the kid in you. There is so much to try out, to touch, to do, to experiment, real edutainment.... It's a real success - 400.000 visitors per year can't be wrong.... Leave a Comment Address: UniversitätDirections: Across from the park hotel Munte, next to the University

The "Dom" in Bremen is one of Germanies largest cathedrals, not as big and famous as the one in Cologne, but also of the rather impressive dimension. The towers are 98m high and can be climbed. The stairs are very steep, though, good workout..... On top you have a great view over city, harbour and suburbs. Leave a Comment Address: Domplatz Bremen downtown - can't miss it...

This is one of the oldest streets of Bremen. In the middle ages the pigs were driven through this street to the grazing land outside of the city. Nowadays Soegestrasse is a major shopping area of the city. Leave a Comment Directions: North of the city hall.
