Binnen and Aussenalster, Hamburg
I finally made it to Rathausmarkt after walking all over the place from University to the boats to the water. A charming place, with palm trees. Couldn't believe it! I thought this was a northern city!
The Rathaus is impressive and I read that it's Neo-Renaissance style. Yep, that's what it looks like. What I loved most is how people here go about their lives, quietly and happily, no one bothers you or screams at you, or gets overly excited over trivia. You're free to look around you and observe but it's all quite relaxed. There is a northern atmosphere to it all, yet it's not at all cold. You can feel good here.
Lots of good food and beer all around too. Those white tents in front of the Rathaus were so white and clean, they impressed me. Even if I felt at first that the Rathaus facade should be left unencumbered. Everyone there was having a good time so that's fine. After all, a city is for its people. So I liked it. :-)
Fondest memory: the people
Fondest memory: Where else in Europe do you find a big lake right next to the city centre, surrounded by upper class quarters and parks? Actually it is not a real lake but a river called “Alster”. During the warm period you can go sailing on the water and running, biking and walking all year long at its river-bank. There are plenty of water-side cafés all around. The views of Hamburg from there are just unforgettable.
Enjoy the Alster. It is great that the city center is occupied by this man-made lake. From the bridge that divides it into the inner and outer Alster, you can have a great view of the Jungfernstieg and the city's skyline and the spires of its churches. The outer Alster is much larger and it is surrounded by a park. It is perfect for jogging, strolling, sailing...
Fondest memory: The combination of the elegant atmosphere of some neighborhoods and the bohemian charachter of a harbor city make of Hamburg a unique place.
Favorite thing: Visit the Alster (Big Alster, outer Alster, that´s all the same water ;-) and ship-travel on many water channels, between villages, under bridges, beside small castles....very nice and relaxing!!!
It was a sunny day. Walking along the bank of the lake, watching people enjoying sailing there, I almost could feel the pleasure they have.
The lake is just like a pearl embeded in Hamburg.
Favorite thing: This picture shows the view from the Jungfernstieg along the Binnenalster. These boats are going on Alster cruise.
This nice villa is located on the Aussenalster near the Krugkoppelbrücke.
A walk or bike ride around the Aussenalster is also very nice during the summer. Lots of biker and jogger.
Favorite thing: - Make a cruise on the lake Alster, along the channels in a Fleetfahrt or rent a canoe like the people on this picture. (Canoes are available for rent in Ohlsdorf)
