 | Hamburg General Tips | Tips 1 - 10 of 161 | | Losing my wallet and U.S. passport! The ultimate nightmare but do not despair: There are NO longer any emergency passport services for U.S. citizens in Hamburg. It is helpful to have a copy of one's passport AND essential to file a report with the local Police station (the local police as very cordial and usually have decent English skills). Very important to have a copy of this police report along with the xerox copy of one's lost/stolen passport. Hang onto even when leaving the country. ****The police will give you the number of the lost property division so you can call them in the days and weeks after just in-case someone is kind enough to return your lost/stolen goods.**** The easiest, best way is to travel to Berlin and to be at the U.S. Consulate by 8:30 am sharp! (NO appointment is necessary) Monday thru Friday (EXCEPT on national holidays). The consulate is way off the tourist map and is completely different location than the U.S. Embassy. See my Berlin "tips" on a nearby hotel next door. For about 90 Euros they will process an emergency passport. They even have a photo machine to take the pictures although it is safest to have these photos with you already since the machine might not function (it seemed to work only in the "German" language mode and not th"English" one!). By Noon I had my new passport which is only good for a year. They also do passport services in Frankfurt BUT much more complicated because one needs to make an appointment as opposed to just walking into the agency. The Deutche Post Bank offices serve as the local Western Union agents all across Germany. Money wired from America can be picked-up in any DPB location BUT you must have the money sent to the EXACT name on your passport. Even one letter off will cause a problem. You will need to fill-out a "Geldempfang" form ("to receive money") and look for the "Western Union" sign above a particular teller's window since not all clerks offer this service. Leave a Comment

For those Indians who are in Hamburg during the festival season of Durga Puja and Diwali, here's something you can try to visit. There's an Indian community in Hamburg that celebrates Durga Puja and other festvals every year and the location is at Berner Heerweg at Farmsen-Berne. The puja's and the community meetings take place at Haus der Jugend Farmsen, and is a great experience. It is very easy to reach the place by U-Bahn. Take U1 and get down at Farmsen. The Haus der Jugend is just 10 stairs away.
We were here during the Durga Puja festival (Navami & Dashami) 2007 and got a warm welcome and real good Indian food at the end of everyday.

We had a great time at the funfair in the park in St. Pauli. We were walking back to our hotel through the park after a long day of sightseeing in the city and it was very easy to give in to temptation and spend the evening here. I think my favourite memory was going on the Bumper Cars after 5 pints of German beer. Leave a Comment

Many buildings are very close together in Hamburg to save space and therefore share common walls. Bulidings which have outside walls often rent them to companies as advertising space. Some on the other hand take a slightly less commercial route and have large murals done on the sides of them. Several of these come to mind right away. The first is just south of Hoheluft brücke and is of gray cats laying on a windowsill. The second is near the Billstedt Einkaufzentrum on Schiffbeckerweg and it is an underwater scene. Another is on Muehlendamm in Hamburg on the left handside of the road if you are heading towards Berliner Tor right if you are headed towards Mundsburg. There is an old Del Monte advertisement on a building on Amsinckstrasse past the ADAC by a lot near the Huhnerpost. Ive included this one because it isnt a standard framed billboard but a painted mural. Im sure there are more through out the city but these are definitely worth checking out. NOTE : THe buliding in the photo has unfortunately been repainted and the art covered. Leave a Comment

Altona was a separate city from Hamburg for most of its existence - in fact, it was in a separate country until 1867! As an enclave of Denmark, Altona had a Scandinavian propriety about it that was lacking in the more salty and sailor-y Hamburg. The "refinement" of Altona is reflected in the fine building that served as its town hall - a marked contrast to the exuberance (some might say vulgarity) of Hamburg's Rathaus. Leave a Comment
