STILL LIGHT AT MIDNIGHT IN HAMBURG by nikola316 THIS PICTURE WAS TAKEN IN THE MID TO LATE PART OF MAY FROM MY FRIEND'S FLAT. I HAD FORGOTTEN MY GEOGRAPHY TEMPORARILY. HAMBURG IS AT ABOUT THE SAME LATITUDE AS THE HUDSON BAY IN CANADA... THUS GIVING IT LONG DAYS IN THE SUMMER AND SHORT DAYS IN THE WINTER. I ARRIVED AT THE MAIN STATION IN HAMBURG AT ABOUT 20:30 AND IT WAS ABOUT AS LIGHT AS NEW YORK WOULD BE AT 17:00. I WAS SO TIRED FROM THE TRAIN RIDE THAT I GUESS IT DIDN'T REGISTER IN MY MIND THAT THIS WAS UNUSUAL. BUT WHEN I LOOKED AT THE CLOCK, AND IT WAS NEARLY MIDNIGHT... I JUST HAD TO TAKE A PICTURE OF THE SUNLIGHT REFLECTING OFF OF THE BUILDINGS.
THE TRAIN RIDE THERE. IT IS MY FONDEST MEMORY BECAUSE IT WAS A SLEEP DEPRIVING NIGHTMARE. I WAS AWAKE FOR OVER 40 HOURS... WITHOUT NAPPING. I JUST COULD NOT SLEEP. SOMETIMES YOU CAN LOOK BACK AT HELLISH TIMES WITH FONDNESS. ALSO ARRIVING AT THE STATION AND WAITING FOR MY BUDDY TO SHOW UP WAS INTERESTING. I WAS FINALLY GOING TO BE ABLE TO GET SOME SLEEP. by andrea.d No trip to Hamburg is complete without a boat trip on the Alster. The simplest option is the "tour of the Alster". One of the white characteristic boats takes youright round the lake. Then you have the classic "Alster cruise" where nine stops are made between the Jungfernstieg and the Winterhuder Fahrhaus and back again. The whole trip lasts around two hours. Then there are "Fleet trips" from the Alster via the Schaartor Lock into the Speicherstadt, duration is approx. 2 hours. There are also "canal trips". Prices: round trip is 8 euro, Fleete trip 13 euro, canal trip 11 euro. Children pay half-price. Alster-Touristik: tel 3574240, www.alstertouristik.de Leave a Comment

by andrea.d If you are in Hamburg it would be a shame not visiting a town Lubeck. It takes about 50 minutes to get there by train. Train leaves from Hauptbahnhof every hour. I went there to visit the first German ice and snow sculpture festival and it was really fantastic! Please take a look at my Ice World travelogue! Leave a Comment

by Ruediger If you visit Hamburg you must make a tour through the harbour by ship. You can see big ships, loding many containers from the land. Normaly one ship stays three days in the harbour and than it starts and brings the shipment far away to other countries. But take a jacked with you because it is very windy and cold on the ship. More Pics at:Travelogue The harbour lies on the river called 'Elbe' Leave a Comment

Hummel, Hummel by Leipzig In the early 18th century lived a soldier in Hamburg who was very popular by the kids due to his interesting stories about the world. Everytime they saw him they called "Hummel, Hummel" in order to hear an interesting story. When the soldier died an embittered man named Johann Wilhelm Bentz (1787 -1854) moved into the soldier's flat. As the kids also greeted him with "Hummel, Hummel" he answered "Mors, Mors" which means something like "kiss my ass". However, it has become a popular greeting in Hamburg. Leave a Comment

Where are the Beatles? by AndyRG This famous red-light district is the best attraction in the city... There are so many erotic clubs, but even theaters, clubs, bars. It is the quarter where the Beatles, one of my favorite groups, began their international career. It was a pity not to find this house during my visit at this strange and attractive place...
